From OAK, you board the AirBart shuttle bus to the Bart station.
You can pay onboard $2.00, or buy a ticket before you board. The machine is near the bus stop. I suggest carrying 2 singles and avoid the machine line.

It's a 10 minute ride to Bart.

You'll have to navigate a ticket machine for Bart. The cost is $3.15 to downtown San Francisco. I got off at Montgomery St. That's where the Palace Hotel is. One more stop to Powell St (Union Square), or 1 less stop to the Embarcadero.

If you don't have to switch trains (watch the destination signs), it's a 20 minute ride. If you're continuing on to SFO airport, I'd say you should add another 30 minutes to the trip. If you do switch trains because you're dumb enough to take the wrong train :o add 10 minutes.

Pretty painless if you ask me.

When I have rode this in the past, they have refused to take cash.

I recommend that if you know you are going to ride BART from OAK, then go ahead and purchase the BART Travel Pack from the BART online store. http://www.bart.gov/tickets/sales/onlineOrdering.asp

It will have all the tickets you need and totally worth the 55 cents in postage to not have to stand in any lines to buy tickets.
