Air New Zealand Air Points - Letter from NZ about Airpoints changes

Hi everyone,

Not sure if this warrants a special thread but I just received a letter (as I am sure many of you will have) dated July 26 from NZ announcing that the changes to the Airpoints programme will be made known in the next few days. I'm too lazy to type in the whole letter but two key points are:

a) the letter addresses 4 concerns: 1) concerns from members over points redemption (never had any trouble myself except for *awards, but there you go), 2) the relationship with some financial partners is not economic, 3) rewards currently recognise distance flown rather than dollars spent, 4) volume of airpoints grows by 5 billion annualy. This means more points competing for fixed awards.

b) the letter continues: '...They will see customers earning points on our domestic, Tasman, and PI services particularly benefit (not sure about the grammar here). However, some long haul economy customers may earn fewer points in the future'. (Great! I never earn points on my domestic flights and will now get fewer for my longhaul travel in discount economy - but hey, be optimistic, let's see what happens first).

It also mentions 'an enhanced relationship with the new Global Plus Amex card'.

That's about it.

IMHO it is a waste of paper - doesnt clarify anything and leads to thinking of more questions, plus it comes off as apologetic and defensive which doesnt put me in a good frame of mind waiting for the changes.

I agree. What's the point of doing a mailout anyway if you are going to communicate the actual changes 'in the next few days' ?
