Route Becomes Latest GoFares Market

ARLINGTON, Va., July 26, 2004 -- US Airways today announced that it will resume service between New York (LaGuardia) and Fort Lauderdale, Fla., on Nov. 7, 2004, with four daily nonstop roundtrip flights. With the introduction of this service, US Airways also brings customers its new low GoFares® , with ticket prices starting as low as $99* one way, with no minimum stay or roundtrip purchase required.

"Our decision to resume service in the New York-Florida market marks the beginning of many other changes to our network as we continue to implement our transformation plan," said Andrew P. Nocella, US Airways vice president of network and revenue management. "Fort Lauderdale is the second largest destination from New York and we are very pleased to be able to restore service and offer low fares on this popular route, one that we served for many years."

*US Airways’ GoFares are simple, however, in addition to the fare, the federal government requires that the company collect a tax of $3.10 every time a customer takes off on one of US Airways’ planes, plus $2.50 per segment, up to $10 per trip (the September 11th Security Fee). Some of the airports that customers might visit also charge up to $4.50 for passing through, but the total is capped at $18 per trip. The lowest fares must be purchased seven days in advance and are nonrefundable. Other restrictions may apply. For more details, see usairways.com.

At LaGuardia, US Airways operates 203 daily departures to 39 destinations in the U.S., Canada and the Caribbean. From Fort Lauderdale, US Airways operates six daily flights to Philadelphia (a seventh trip will be added in October), five daily flights to Charlotte, N.C., three daily flights to Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport, two daily flights to Pittsburgh, once-weekly (Saturday) service to Providence, R.I., and twice-weekly (Wednesday and Saturday) service to Bermuda.

US Airways is the nation’s seventh-largest airline, serving nearly 200 communities in the U.S., Canada, Europe, the Caribbean and Latin America. Very good. The only reason that US has not been my company of choice this year is the lack of nonstops to South Florida from NY, and that problem will be solved in November. They go everywhere else that I need them nonstop from LGA.

I signed up for the RoachFest as a part-time flyer on the U and this almost certainly will move me from part-time to full-time Cockroach status for 2005. Anything they provide will almost certainly be better than Song and cheaper than JetBlue (which has cleverly managed to slip under the publicity radar to become the high priced carrier out of JFK and LGA). It appears that the US management has been able to read the signals (they probably are learning a lot of lessons fighting WN in PHL) and all they need to do, unlike Song and DL, is to acknowledge who their best customers are in order to get all our business.

Thanks for your support. I hope that you will be able to upgrade in true cockroch style. Surprisingly, the initial sked is showing A319s on the route; I would have expected57s in the "low yield market" config of 8 F/C seats.

I think this is smart of US. It was completely idiotic of the major player at LGA to not serve of of NYC's most important markets. I hope they are planning to add PBI/MCO/RSW and dare I suggest...MIA in the future. Four flights a day is a good frequency.

Maybe also shows how stupid DL was to elminate mainline (and hence F class) out of LGA.

Finally, I have to stick up for B6. Yes they are not always the cheapest, but many times, when I'm trying to book at the last minute, if I monitor their website every 20-30 minutes, I can find seats open on "sold out" days for around $450 r/t. Not great, but nice to know I can get down to FLA last minute with some perserverance.
