In June I took a trip to Asia and visited a few countries. The highlight of the trip was our stay at Amanpuri (in Phuket, Thailand). We reserved a 3 bedroom villa and they upgraded us to one with ocean view. According to the staff at the resort, the villa we stayed at #24 is one of the best they have. There is another one (cannot remember the #) that is equally as good. Apparently, you cannot request the specific villa number and just get assigned to one that fits the category you booked in. So we were lucky and very happy to get villa 24.

We had one cook and two maids taking care of us the entire time. I found out when talking to one of them that Pierce Brosnan and Leonardo DiCaprio have both stayed there and then he showed me the pictures he took with each of them.

Having had the chance to stay in many luxury resorts before, this place beats them all hands down! And for the price compared to what we paid in other countries, it was well worth it!

I've taken some pictures of the villa for everyone to enjoy! Let me know if you have any specific questions. Unfortauntely, I forgot to take pictures of the bedrooms themselves. Each bedroom was in a separate hut.

Also, I flew TG from HKG-BKK and bought a business class ticket but upgraded at the airport to F using a *A upgrade certificate. It was on a 747-400 and I had the entire F cabin to myself! First time just by myself in international F and it was great! They had to get catering to load up food for me and of course I couldn't finish anything near what they loaded. They had 3 main courses to choose from plus one cake for dessert. The one good thing about being myself was that they closed all the window shades for me and turned off the overhead projector. I was able to get a good hour+ of sleep before we landed. When I arrived at BKK for transit there was someone meeting me off the plane who took me to the new F lounge where I got a chair massage! The person taking me to the lounge asked me why I decided to upgrade because when she checked earlier there was no one in F. She asked was it for extra comfort and I said yes. When in fact I did it because there was no one else in F! :D

What a beautiful property. Makes me want to go there. Do they have a website?

I do have a question. Why were you flying alone? Did you stay at the hotel alone, or did you meet your group on the ground? I know it sounds curious to be asking this. I just noticed that you'd reserved a 3 bedroom. That's all.

Hi, I went to Amanpuri with my family and another family who are close family friends. So total of 6 of us. I traveled separately because I went to Singapore before Phuket so flew HKG-BKK-SIN (stop) -BKK-HKT (stop). I met the rest of the party there.

The general website is www.amanresorts.com

Advice to wanna-be visitors:

(We stayed either here, or in the equivalent 3-4B; you do not show gym/ office by the ocean pics so I'd never know).

Prices are way above 500 UDS/ p.room/ p.night; place is remote so you experience all the hotel services and nothing from the utside island.

Unless you book a 2-4B villa, you get a plain hut with common swimming pool (here pool is private) and no views at par with Sukhotai. Expect to see - honeymooners galore. Beach - almost non-existent, low down.

Rating:
2-4B villas - exceptional and worthy by themselves.
The single huts is the "mass hotel part": go to Sukhothai Bkk, maybe Banyan Tree Phuket... same to me. High 5* quality, but not worthy the "celebrity" premium.

Thanks for the trip report! It's always nice to hear about an Aman. The villas sound divine and especially great if you have a larger group.

Having done a lot of research on this property, and knowing a little bit about the Amans, I would add this. Re: the "regular" pavillions (which is how my husband and I always stay, not villas) we find that the Amans usually offer one or two units in exceptional surroundings and with the very best views. In Amanpuri's case, that pavillion is #105. It's the one that you see pictures of on the Aman Web site rate guide.

You'll find at Aman, it "pays" to pay more per night for the best experience. That's why, at Amankila, we opted for the Indrakila suite and at Amanpulo, we're schilling out for deluxe hillside #40. We love the fact that the Amans are always in such beautiful settings, so we always try to find the unit that will best take advantage of the setting.

Great memories, bagold! The pictures tell it all! Did you get to meet the general managing couple, John and Tonya? They were great when we were there in October 03.

The Amanpuri is a special Aman Resort for us since we just had a baby girl and that is where she was conceived! Quite beautiful :)

Beautiful! Are there any activities that young American teens would enjoy - boat trips, etc??

Yes, definitely! There are day trips out to Phi Phi Island and James Bond Island. Good for snorkeling too! Also white water rafting. Send the kids away on these trips and sit back and enjoy the resort yourselves! :)

Better just to go to their website and poke around.

Besides, Amanpuri is offering a 50% off rate through the fall to generate business after the tsunami. If ever you wanted to visit this fabulous resort, it would make sense to go now.

I wish I weren't in the process of building a small business. No personal expenditures of this nature. Alas.
