OK, so I'm sitting here at DFW waiting out a gate hold in PHL, and a flight to PIT pre-boards next door with the following announcement (paraphrased):

"good afternoon....blah blah blah.....we would now like to welcome aboard our first-class passengers as well as Chairmans preferred, Preferred Plus, and dividend preferred members....something about United...etc. etc."

So, the obvious questions:

1. Was this gate agent mixing her FF programs? If so, is it UA's she's mixing up with US?

2. And if not, then what the heck is "preferred plus"?

Well, Starwood has now Trademark Registered "Preferred Plus" for their AARP program of marketing to those over 50 with significant discounts, late check-out, etc

On AARP's website, US is the only domestic airline providing deals for AARP members - it's a resource to check when you need to fly in the in-laws ;)

Before I get too long-winded and off-topic, I think the US agent simply misspoke....I do the same after a long day........

:D

And all joking aside that is exactly what it looked like last night on a flight from DFW. I swear 70% of the flight was preferred and by the time I got in line I was about number 50. There was no one left in the gate area.

Every so often, particularly on Monday morning and Friday evening flights between PIT and PHL, status based boarding is often disposed of specifically because of the phenomenon that you mention.

I remember when most flights out of Detroit going East were cancelled one night a few years ago due to a very long band of Thunderstorms up and down the east coast. The next morning when they announced Preferred boarding about 100 people stood up (who else flies to Detroit on USAir?) The gate announcer said he was sorry but he had to rescind that offer and would board by rows.

Now that was funny! I have not laughed like that in a long time. :D

Many many years ago, Gold was, in fact, called Preferred Plus.

If I remember correctly, it went like this:

Preferred --> Silver

Preferred Plus --> Gold

Chairman's Preferred --> stayed the same

Here (http://web.archive.org/web/19970606170922/www.usair.com/dividend/levels/index.htm)'s a 1997 webpage, courtesy of The Wayback Machine (http://www.archive.org/web/web.php).

And before that, the lowest elite level used to be "Priority Gold," followed by "Priority Gold Plus," (and there was no Chairman's level)

If only we could use those archived links to bring back Priority Travel Works. That software program rocked when it came to finding good fares and building mileage runs. It was unbelievable.

The most dangerous place to be Monday am is near the gate for the CLT to PHL flight early am when they announce preboarding.

I like how UA handles boarding. They do First class first, then elites, then everyone else. Also, US needs to send a communication out (and have agents sign it to prove they read it) that details what the boarding announcement should be. I've heard everything but the real tier levels when it concerns welcoming UA and Star Alliance members to board with US elites.

Yes, it was much better than the current website. I remember people being fascinated back then (1995-1996)by the idea of booking flights online. In fact, I still have an old CD for that program somewhere.
