Lufthansa, US Airways sign cargo cooperation deal
Friday July 23, 7:21 am ET
FRANKFURT, July 23 (Reuters) - Deutsche Lufthansa AG (XETRA:LHAG.DE - News) and US Airways (NasdaqNM:UAIR - News) have signed an agreement to cooperate on air freight services between Europe and the United States, the companies said on Friday.
Under the marketing and freight handling pact, Lufthansa Cargo will help fill capacity in the bellies of US Airways flights from Europe to America, beginning September 1.
The airlines will also combine their cargo operations in joint facilities at all the European airports served by US Airways, as well as at Philadelphia, Pittsburgh and Charlotte in the United States, in order to lower operating costs.
"Lufthansa Cargo customers will benefit from an even more attractive network in the future," said Andreas Otto, Lufthansa Cargo executive board member for marketing and sales.
Lufthansa Cargo, based at Frankfurt airport, is the biggest air cargo company in the world with 6.7 percent of the global market, measured in tonnage multiplied by distance travelled.
The company is cutting costs and trying to stimulate growth to return to profit levels of 2000, before an economic downturn caused a slump in the air freight market. Currently 0.5 percent of cargo is transported by air worldwide.
