OK,

I am headed to LA on a Friday at noon and coming back from San Francisco on a Friday at noon. Upgrade seats are already close to only 1 left. So my thinking, and those on this board, is that even as a US2, clearing those upgrades will be a challenge at best. Here's my question- I've got plenty of miles...so is it worth burning 20K to upgrade? How's the service been? I haven't done a transcon in US in about a year. Is it still a sandwich or salad for lunch??????

Thanks! I appreciate the advise!

Yes, the lunch is still a sandwich (that may or may not come with some condiment to make it semi-moist) or a salad, followed by warm cookies. Don't count on the upgrade--they're becoming more and more difficult on this route, even for CPs. I didn't clear on Monday and took the ride in 9C. It's a little short on width but TONS of legroom and I found my first IFC meal to be quite acceptable. A delightful FA and two rounds of beverage service.

Those are the facts--you decide for yourself if it's worth 20,000 miles. Sounds like you might not even get a seat for miles at this point.

Good luck.

My rule of thumb these days is if I can score an exit row or bulkhead seat in both directions (9C being the best Y seat on the plan, IMHO), and/or I'm confident I can clear in at least one direction, it's not worth burning 20K miles. In fact, I'm so confident I will not get upgraded from 9C on the 3:30PM LAX-PHL flight on Friday, 8/6, that I'm not even going to bother packing my own condiments. Instead, I'll bring along an extra $10 to try the IFC meal, which I've thankfully never been in the position to do. I feel like it's my duty to at least sample IFC prior to Roachfest so I can speak from experience.
