Maybe this is a stupid question, but here goes.... my parents gave me and my husband 50,000 dividend miles ea. for tickets to London. Is it possible for us to pay to have these tickets upgraded to Envoy class? or are there anyother options for us to upgrade?

Actually, they would have had to book the tickets for you themselves out of their accounts. Saying they "gave you" 50,000 miles implies those miles went into your mileage account and then you booked the tickets yourself. That being said there is, unfortunately, no way to upgrade those award tickets.

I would recommend getting seat assignments as soon as possible and seek the forward economy section of the A-330 (the type of plane you are most likely flying to London). That forward economy section of the A-330 has more room than the aft section. See the following website for details... and choose the US Airways A-330.

They could have given them miles on a transfer from Amex MR. Otherwise you are correct that they would have to book the tickets for them.

Sorry to go off-topic. I use the SPG Amex and not the MR Program so I don't know much about it. But can you transfer MR points from your AMEX account to another individual's (family? non-family?) airline mileage account?

And back on-topic... my favorite economy seats on the A330 to London are rows 9 thru 20 seats A,B,G, or H. :)

Amex doesn't ask for any account numbers until you want to transfer miles. That is one thing that is nice about the program. You can build a bank of miles and transfer to one or multiple accounts at the same time.

What about buy/gift miles? That is also possible.

Those programs have a maximum of 15,000 miles per year per account so highly doubtful. ;)

Welcome to FT, bailey76, and to the US corner!

While paying to upgrade an award ticket is not possible, you could perhaps think about buying a ticket (any Economy fare class, except W or S IIRC, is upgradeable transAtlantic) and asking your folks for an extra 10k Miles each for a possible upgrade (30k each way per pax). It's based on availability, and sometimes you may not be able to confirm the upgrade at booking. Of course, buying the more expensive Y or B fares gets you an Envoy upgrade for only 10k each way, and upgradeable at booking too, but I don't think many vacationing pax do that.

Don't know where you're flying from, and in which time frame, but transAtlantic fares should be more of a bargain as cooler weather approaches.

Best wishes for a good trip!
