Well, American's one of (albeit not the only( the airline that one that's been assigned Air Marshals to ride shotgun. Secondly, some time ago (granted I couldn't find it via search) there was a thread by an FTer who actually engaged someone he thought (and turned out to be) a marshal. I remember that the consensus on the thread was that *it wasn't a good idea to call attention to them and possibly get in trouble for interfering with them in some way.
