Buy a gift card at a certain retail store for $1000, turn it into a money order (cost: 46 cents), deposit it in the bank, pay CC bill (UA MP visa) electronically.

Got 10,000 miles this month for $4.60 total. At this rate, the 60,000 for a standard award ticket to ITO for the holidays will cost exactly $27.60.

Well, I'll have to pay the $10 9/11 security fee, but I guess I won't complain.

(edit: well it's a new record for me...maybe you can beat it)

To see the thread and to see it on one's mileage statement at the end of the month are 2 different things. I couldn't help myself. It's a thing of beauty.

Your cost is .00046 not .0046 per mile...a big difference

Many, many of us got a whole boatload of miles from the Charter One card offer for a net cost of $0.00 -- so I think your new record isn't a record at all.

And the cost to the credit card company to buy you those 10,000 miles? At 1.5 cents a mile, it will be $150. At 1 cent a mile, it will cost them $100. So, you've paid $4.60, and they've paid $100-150 to buy the miles. In addition, the store where you bought the gift card pays a processing fee to the credit card company--let's say 2%--so they've paid $200 for your $10,000 in purchases, and you've turned around and cashed out by buying a money order, instead of merchandise. They're not making any profit from you at all.

I don't know if I'd be so elated about this scheme :(

It is the Wal-Mart scheme - which is where the 46 cent money order comes in.

Why we need yet another thread on this, is beyond me. Maybe it's to avoid the already existing discussion on how this violates Wal-Mart policies in most places.

Are you saying I can walk up to the Customer Service desk in Wal-Mart, buy a Wal-Mart gift card with my mileage-earning credit card, and then use that gift card to buy a money order of an equal amount? Why should Wal-Mart allow a scheme like that if they lose money?

I agree with a number of the posters, we do not need to start another thread on Wal-Mart. This is more then a housekeeping thing, it assists "newbies" in navigating the complex FT boards.

For now I'll be closing this. If the OP would like to email me with information that contradicts the conventional wisdom, I'll be happy to re-open it.
