Last year I visited Anguilla and really enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere. I would very much like to return to the caribbean but Anguilla was simply too expensive to live in. Can anyone give me advice on which island to go to when you are on a budget?
I flew in to and spent a day in St. Martin and did not like that island at all. Too crowded and commercialized so island like that I would like to avoid (although if I go back, most defenately I would visit SXM airport.. :) ).
Any advice on where to direct my dreaming?

Lodging on Tobago can be really cheap if you don't want luxury. I'm not sure about the price of airfare since we did FF tickets. While not technically the Caribean, the Cancun/Riveria Maya can be done on a budget and there are great ruins to see.

When you go can have a huge impact on cost. Summer is far cheaper than winter. Hurricane season officially starts June 1 and goes to November, with peak period being in September. In mid-August rates usually take another drop. Chances of being in a hurricane though are very slim and the weather is usually still very nice.

Thank you for your suggestions. I did already go (http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/showthread.php?t=182210) during the hurricane season and although I hardly didn't see the sun during my stay I still want to return. The problem isn't so much the lodging I think as that usually can be found cheap. I'm more looking for an island where living is cheap; food, transport etc..
Are the places suggested so far good in this aspect?

I can only comment on a few of the places mentioned. I know Cayman is very expensive food wise ect... My husband interviewed for a job there and the cost of living was very, very high.
I am not sure Haiti would be a very good place to go right now. Maybe it's just me but it is still pretty unstable, IMHO.
We were in Dominican Republic last year. Most of the tourist places are all-inclusive but they are really cheap by American standards. The food was of a decent quality at the Coral Hamaca. And most say that the ai in Dominica are of acceptable quality.
In Tobago we stayed at the Hilton and were not impressed. There were many places in Crown Point that many people stayed in for long periods. There were places to eat at various prices.
The Yucatan Pennisula in Mexico can be done on any budget. Food can be first class to street vendors. Lots to see and do. Transport can be anything from car rental, tour bus to local bus. Many tourists use the local bus system. It just takes some organizing.
Hope this helps :)

As a swedish resident (I assume from your post) Cuba can be a very inexpensive place for you. So is Barbados, Trinidad...

I'm not much help on places that are cheap, but I can tell you what places to avoid because they are expensive. Stay away from St. Barth's, St. Maarten and Virgin Gorda (at least stay away from the Bitter End Yacht Club).
