Most US airlines said Tuesday that they will cut some fares by about 25 percent into December, trying to ensure that the strong traffic levels seen in recent months will continue into what is typically a slower fall travel season.

Stupid question... if I booked an economy seat two weeks ago... nonrefundable... and it is now $50 cheaper... can I get the lower fare or am I tied into my original ticket? It is paid for....

Just wondering.

Thanks

William

wharvey, while they won't refund the difference, they may offer you a credit which you can apply for a future trip. That's my experience when I've purchased a ticket only to discover it was later reduced in price.

NOTICE:

Bestfares has yet to post this sale. They only advise of their own deals. My surmise still stands: Bestfares isn't giving us the best fares, especially "snooze alarms," as in the past.

I second this-- they really are slacking.

I wonder if there are new people there who don't know a lot about the airlines. I've seen some big mistakes in the info they give recently.

I read the Southwest Press Release annoudcing the fares-- I'm surprised they didn't make a single Freedom/4th of July reference. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif I was half-expecting a $198 anywhere sale to start soon after the 4th of July....

Wharvey, some airlines will also charge you the change fee (typically $75) to re-ticket you at the lower fare. If the fee is less than the savings, you're out of luck http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/frown.gif and even if the savings are larger you'll lose most of it to the fee (but still worth doing just to avoid leaving the airline with that last $15 http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif).

Jul 13, 00, 12:08 am
I've only had lower fares with AA and I have never been charged the $75 change fee - always given a voucher for the credit. There has to be availability for the exact routing and flights that you are booked on, but available with the lower fare.

any of the sales on Delta from Atlanta?

thanks!

Jul 13, 00, 11:26 pm
I, too, noticed the unadvertised sale on several airlines. Currently, Continental is honoring most of the Southwest routes--just take a look at their website. $209 to almost anyplace Southwest flies (and is offering their sale fares) This is great news for those of us in the hinterlands--we rarely get great sales like this.

Speaking of Bestfares (I'm a member also)---I am still expecting my July issue of their magazine. I always receive it late ( 5 or six days), but this is a new record. By the time I receive the current magazine (if I do), most of the info will be outdated. Their magazine is glossy but its late delivery is a big disappointment.

The US Air weekend sale Doc posted is a great way for FlyerTalkers in DC, Boston, or NYC to rack up some segments & miles on BOTH US Air and AA. The $79 fare for shuttle flights from DCA to LGA actually works out to $90 once taxes/departure fees are included, but it is still a cheap roundtrip, particularly since no overnight is required. The fare qualifies for the US Air 1000 mile on-line booking bonus plus you get at least the minimum 500 miles each way in your Dividend Miles account. The best part is that members of AAdvantage who are registered for the US/AA Shuttle promo also receive 500 miles each way and the segments count toward tier status on AA!

A single roundtrip will net me almost 4600 miles when I include my US Air Silver Preferred and AA Platinum bonuses. Not bad for $90.

UA today announced a fall sale with substantial savings on domestic and international round trip travel with fewer restrictions.

The world's largest air carrier said it will cut some fares by as much as 55 percent into December to woo back customers driven away by massive flight delays and cancellations this summer.

The unit of UAL Corp. said many domestic round-trip flights through Dec. 14 are now priced, on average, 45 to 55 percent below the structured fare, the typical fare that customers pay 21 days in advance for travel that includes a Saturday night stay.

To Wharvey:

I've seen several posts to your question and I wanted to make sure you knew that airlines MUST give you a credit when your fare decreases (it has to be the same flight, though) and they cannot charge a $75 change fee.

Airline policies differ, however, in how they give you the credit and how you use the credit.

For example, Delta requires you to go to a ticket office or airport to pick up or use a voucher. If a Northwest price drops, however, you can just call and they'll mail the voucher. And when you want to redeem a NW voucher, you can make a phone reservation and mail the voucher - no need to go to a ticket office.

Your comment was interesting. According to UAChris on here, a cash difference refund will require a $75 fee to be paid. A voucher credit does not require the $75 fee.

In fact, he processed the fee.

HHHHmmmm... now I am confused!

COAST-TO-COAST $198 RT ON 4 MAJOR AIRLINES THROUGH JAN 7, 2001.

Hurry. Tthis is your last chance to purchase holiday season coast-to-coast fares for only $198 RT. You have a choice of 4 major
airlines, which means that you have more opportunity to travel on the dates you prefer between now and January 7, 2001. Buying now and choosing your departure and destination cities creatively can enable you to travel in style on a pauper’s budget! For example, Washington DC to fun-in-the-sun San Diego is selling for $685 RT -- but if you fly out of Baltimore your fare drops to just $198 RT! So three of you can fly from
Baltimore for less the price of one from Washington DC. Plus, you can use
the remaining $91 for a stretch-limo to get you there in style with enough
cash left over for a bottle of champagne along the way. For details on
more coast-to-coast savings opportunities, visit:

Well folks, the deals really seem to be over and the airlines have jacked fares up all over the place. With the exception of a few routings here and there, fares I have checked lately on most all airlines are up at least 15% over where they were before the sales, with many routings seeing increases of 33%!

only for the time being. if you look at the amount of internet only sales delta is offering 9(about 10 in addition to the regular weekly web and escape plan sales), plus the cybersavers nw has for next wknd to ams, you'll realize this is only the beginning. with everybody worrying about oil prices, bookings are low, and prices will fall in the next coming weeks.

i just got an icleandair websaver for $99 dollars each way to europe from the us, and $149 each way to scandinavia(which, i know, is also in europe) for low season travel. i doubt everyone will match, but sooner or later people will come close.

Doc, do you know how the $158 RT cost cited above by Bestfares compares to the $198 RT available on other websites? It seems that with the facility charges, taxes, etc. there is the opportunity to present the price in a more favorable light. I'm thinking that the Bestfares price is equal to or only $20 less than the current Travelocity, ITN, etc. price of $198. (plus some fees to make about $210)

AF has great deals out of its 11 US gateways to just about every city in Europe (we have only listed a few). If you add these deals to what is already out there from Lufthansa and Scandinavian, you just can't miss. Of course Air France is a Biztravel Guaranteed Airline, so this is a great time to check out its service while connecting through Paris. What it really might come down to is: Would you rather have a Bavarian Bretzel (yes, with a 'B') in Frankfurt Airport, or some wine and cheese in Charles de Gaulle during your brief time between flights? I won't tell you my choice, as I don't like to play favorites. Any preferences out there? Lufthansa and SAS are good only for a few more days, but Air France gives to month's end.

$158 COAST-TO-COAST TRAVEL NOW THROUGH MARCH 30, 2001.

Our $158 roundtrip coast-to-coast airfares have been extended for travel
through March 30, 2001. Last week, these fares were slated to expire and
were only valid through January 19, 2001. But due to overwhelming
response, we can now offer you these great fares for another two and a
half months. Airfares to Florida are valid through March 14, 2001, still
allowing you another two months of travel. You will be able to make your
travel plans for much longer in the future. In addition to incorporating
popular holidays such as Thanksgiving, Hanukkah, Christmas and New Year’s,
you can now think about traveling for President’s Day weekend and perhaps
more importantly, a spring getaway. You can fly to or from Orlando, Tampa
or Fort Lauderdale to over 50 U.S. cities for $158 roundtrip or less.
Sales may not last forever, but with our negotiations and the many
requests you gave us, we have been able to extend both the purchase and
travel dates on these spectacular specials. A brief sampling of other
cities includes Las Vegas, Phoenix, Los Angeles, Seattle, San Francisco
and San Diego. Fly cross-country for as low as $158 roundtrip from over 40
Midwestern and Eastern cities.

Beginning Oct. 26, travelers between the nation's capital and Fort Lauderdale and Melbourne, Fla. will have an affordable and convenient jet service option aboard low-fare specialist Spirit Airlines, the largest privately held airline in the United States.
http://biz.yahoo.com/bw/001023/fl_spirit_.html

Pack your bags -- you could be flying in no time at very little expense.
We have just negotiated the lowest fares in America, but you have to hurry
because they will only last for the next four days. Can you believe that
we have cut airfares between 58 U.S. cities to only $148 roundtrip,
seniors $134 roundtrip for travel through March 30, 2001 (Florida thru
3/14)? In fact, seniors can take a companion of any age along for the same
low senior price. That’s only $67 each way! This blowout Super Sale is
practically unbelievable. With the major airlines complaining about higher
fuel costs, you know that they are going to raise airfares again in the
near future. Business travelers have already seen an increase of over $150
roundtrip this year, yet we can now offer you coast-to-coast fares cheaper
than this markup alone.

We haven’t seen coast-to-coast airfares this low in the past five years!
You can bet that when this sale ends on Thursday the published fares on
most major airlines will triple in cost for these same routes. Don’t just
sit there. Phone your family, email your friends and earn some brownie
points with your boss by pointing them to Bestfares.com. Of course, don’t
forget your own pocketbook. It’s like having an after-Christmas sale in
October. For full details and booking information on this promotion,

quickly. For instance, Dayton (OH) to Florida through Bestfares.com is
only $128 roundtrip. Most of our special fares are between $180 and $258

Chicago, Milwaukee, Minneapolis or Houston to Hawaii for $428 roundtrip.
From New York City, Boston, Washington (DC), Orlando or Miami, it’s $502
