Travel Technology - Non GDI color printer for use on print server?

This is not really travel related but I have a question related to adding a printer on our home network. I am currently using a Lexmark E312 with a standard print server. Works like a charm, I paid careful attention and specifically got a laser printer with built-in processor instead of a GDI printer to make sure I would be able to take advantage of a print server. I am assuming this was a good thing and that you can't use a GDI printer with most print servers(?).

So, if I was to add a color printer, what is my cheapest option? Most of the ink-jet ones seem to be GDI based and not have much intelligence. Do I need to get a more expensive "business" ink-jet to make it work? Any suggestions for a particular printer?

Actually, most GDI printers should work just fine on a printer server, the PC side GDI just sends the processed data to the printer. All a printer server does is grab the data off the network and direct it to the printer....

What you do need to make sure of is that the driver will allow you to change the port to a network port, some stubborn printer drivers won't allow that...
