As a MPC member, you have the added advantage of waitlisting on an award flight. Don't put off too long, and place yourself on the waitlist now. It is very hard to say when seats will be available. But freely available seats that have not been taken would already have been by now. So the only options for us, MPC members, is to be placed on waitlist.

I haven't tried LAX-HKG, but HKG-LHR is totally full in the week before Xmas, so I have, most unfotunately, had to take my revenue ticket and my girlfriend's award to BA :(

I can almost certainly gurantee you have 0 luck, sorry to say.

Dec 18 is the Saturday of week before Xmas (24 being next Friday). Presumeably everybody take a week off and try to travel on Saturday. It's already starting to fill for longhual flights.

The waitlist almost certainly never clear well in advance. If they do not clear, you have no ticket. If you wait too long, you loose opportunity to buy cheap tickets.

The only other option is to request "unrestricted" economy award, which are not subject to award inventory. But they "cost" more/just as much as biz award, making them very unattractive.

I was going to contradict you there but checked http://www.asiamiles.com/am/1,,83101_82761_eng,00.html before, You are right! the unrestricted Y awards are more expensive than the business awards. Odd policy, given that they stand to earn more from a free J seat than from a free Y seat.

well.. i am a student from hong kong.. n i m studying in the states.. so cost would be one of the major issue here..

i have always try to search for some good and cheap price between HKG-LAX.. or the other way.. but can't really find any.. (by the way i only travel on oneworld carrier.. hehe)

right now.. i have HKG-LAX.. departing on august.. it is a 9 months ticket.. so i can either use it for my christmas travel.. or next may...

therefore..i have two options..
1. buy a new ticket on HKG - LAX.. departing on January.. n return on May.. n use my 9 months ticket on my christmas travel back home
2. buy a new ticket on LAX - HKG for my christmas travel (departing on december 18.. n come back on early january).. n use my original 9 month ticket for my May travel...

which one wold be cheaper??
