Cathay Pacific Asia Miles - Advice wanted - How to get to Honolulu from HKG

My flying is based out of Hong Kong. I have been wanting to visit Honolulu for some time now, last year on my Honeymoon, we couldn't make the stop on our DONE3 (As it would require flying via Sydney, requiring a 4 Continent ticket & a very long detour), nor am I interested in flying all the way to LAX and backtracking to HON.

I know American Airlines has a Code Sharing flight operated by JAL from Tokyo to Hon, but this sector cannot be flown using a DONE3 ticket. Neither is it alowable to issue the ticket to Tokyo & open jaw the next segment to Hon. as continent jumping is not allowed.

Does anybody here know whether I can book a flight using my Asiamiles on the codesharing flight (AA coded flight operated by JAL), or is there any kind of RTW ticket that I can buy that will allow me to stop in Honolulu conveniently (Ideally transitting through Tokyo) on a Oneworld Airlines Ticket.

Thanks.

Simply, you can use your asiamiles to redeem ticket on JAL.

Update:
I may miss the point.
Unfortunately, Oneway award is not available for JAL flight with Asiamiles.

However, you can book
HKG-(JL/CX)-NRT/NGO/FUK-(JL)-HNL-(JL)-NRT/NGO/FUK-(JL/CX)-HKG

I think AA has applied (and may even have received) some unused route authority for HNL-NRT. Service will be on a 767 due to size/slot availability at NRT.

Should start Nov 1st.

And, Welcome to FlyerTalk, Globalman !

Other ways to get to HNL n/s, although I don't know if they qualify for Asiamiles awards, is ex-MNL and ex-TPE.

Thanks for the advice guys & thanks for the welcome! As i suspected, it seems not possible to reach Honolulu from Hong Kong on Oneworld RTW fares. Its too bad because I am sure there are many people who would like to go via Hawai if it were possible.

And of course, therefore 2 class - just wanted to make sure everyone in Asia remembers this little details of the 767 downgrade at AA

Erm, yes it is. As you identified earlier, you can't do it on a DONE3, but a DONE4 via Sydney will work and I think you can do it on a Global Explorer fare too (the rule against backtracking to the continental US doesn't apply).

Yes thanks for confirming what I said in my original Msg - that it can only be done via Sydney (on a DONE4), which adds alot of costs and time.

I didn't know about the Global Explorer Fare rules details, and definetely will look into that fare (Thanks for the tip), but even so really am only interested in making the stop if it satisfied 2 of my requirements, which are:

1) It doesn't cost me anything more! As I am going on a Business Trip (My wife & me travel together)! & am paying out of my own business, I want to maximize my returns on the DONE3 (Or Global Explorer if it works out) tickets, and don't mind spending a few days to take a break along the way, but it shouldn't cost me more, as I can go to any whre in the Carribean without extra cost.

2) It doesn't mean that I have to backtrack 5 hours each way! Going to LAX from Hkg, then backtracking to Hon then back to LAX is a too much of a waste of time, and is at least 10 hours of extra flying. I could just go to the Carribeans again, which keeps me going forward.

I am very interested to find out any chances to fly via Hon, as I fly this particular RTW run twice a year, every year and always end up in the Carribean somewhere (and am a bit bored of the Carribeans by now).

Good point, although I was not aware of the backtrack ability. We tend to forget about the GE fare - plus a while back LX was part of that fare even though they never made it into OW - does anyone know if you can still fly LX sectors on the GE

The GE fare is a mileage based fare and roughly comparable to the Star RTW product -- so far inferior to OWE in most cases. If you wanted that kind of a RTW presumably you would have bought Star already (and out of HKG there is good availability on SQ).
It sounds from your comments that you have never visited HNL before, in which case you will be greatly disappointed when you do visit. HNL is a very popular destination, but for people who don't have the choice to go someplace better. You do have the choice, and have been going to better places already ... so I think you will find that HNL isn't worth the trouble to visit any more (hasn't been for 20 years). If bored of the carib you can also go to LPA, somewhere in the med (malta, majorca, greece) or dubai. And finally from HKG the natural beach resort is DPS. So pick DPS instead of HNL. Unless you really want to see some well cracked concrete.

True, Honolulu is a dud, but Maui, the Big Island and Kauai are breathtaking. Hawaii is absolutely worth the trip--but so spend as little time in Honolulu as possible.

This topic has been widely discussed before over on the Hawai`i board. If Globalman has any questions regarding any Hawai`i related topics, please post them there: http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?s=&daysprune=&f=435

As far as Honolulu being a "dud", I care to respectfully disagree. Specifically, Waikiki is the dud. If you spend enough time outside of the city, e.g. in Kailua, Waimanalo, Haleiwa-side, avoiding all points inbetween, I think you'll have a great time. IMHO, one day in Waikiki will allow you to take in the sights there yet not be so grossed out with the over-tourism feeling in the area. In my mind, Honolulu is a one-trip deal. Visit it once, then move on, but make that one time count, as O`ahu has a lot to offer.
