Given that flight CX 889 of 21JUN (22JUN for YVR departures) was delayed from 0255 to 0855 (times are YVR departure times) and that it is a "refreshment" + "breakfast" flight, can anyone give me an insight of what types of meals would be served?

Refreshment in the morning (revised YVR departure), and breakfast in the late afternoon (revised HKG arrival)?

Also for the following hypothetical situation:

CX 839 YVR-HKG is scheduled to leave YVR at 3PM and arrive HKG at 8PM.
Usually one would get "dinner" prior to take off and another "dinner (not as elaborate)" prior to landing.

What if the flight gets delayed (let's hope it dosen't) and departs YVR at 7AM the next morning and arrives HKG at 12PM a day later.

Does this mean one would get "dinner" in the morning (after take off), and "dinner (not as elaborate)" prior to landing (with it should have been brunch/lunch instead)? Or would CX be smart enough to let their caterers know about the delay and revise the menu accordingly (i.e. breakfast after take off and brunch/lunch prior to landing instead)?

It would certainly be strange for me to be eating caviar and smoke salmon and other "dinner" foods for breakfast!

Well, according to my limited catering experiences, airline meals have to be prepared in a very specific way to maintain its freshness and safety. First off, if the flights were delayed for only a few hours, there will be no change in the catering. The food will be stored in the freezer a little bit longer than expected. No harm done... unless precious food, such as shellfish...

In that case, the F/As and ISM will be in charge of the meal schedules. They will make their best judgments... in theory, they can switch the meal schedules... they can serve the breakfast first and the supper prior to arrival. For F class, I think the F/As will let the passengers decide. For J and Y, it is up to the iSM. I assume that breakfast will be served first and the supper three hours prior to arrival.

However, if the flights were delayed for more than 24 hours, CX will have to make new food order... I assume that CX 839 food will be used.

Basically meals will not change if a flight has been delayed by a few hours..

The contents may be changed by catering, but a flight's original meal service will not change. If you're meant to have 'Lunch' and the delay has lasped over to dinner... you'll still get a menu that serves 'Lunch' and the contents will not have changed. So if you have to eat caviar and salmon for breakfast... that's what you'll be getting...
