A couple of months ago, I received the silver card in the mail with a letter saying I was three stays short for gold, and advising me if I could get these stays within the next three months, they would reupgrade me to gold.
I called HH, and told them that I certainly understand the rules and they have the perfect right to downgrade me, but I am booking a hotel right now, and I will go on price not loyalty if they didn't at least extend the gold for the three month trial. The clerk checked and told me about the three month silver back to gold deal. I asked for the supervisor, and restated my case. She consented, and said I could have the gold status.
Much to my surprise, I received the gold card with the regular year end expiry date a few weeks later.
The rule-bending worked to both Hilton and my favor. I've certainly already accumulated more than the three stays. Last week, because of weather problems, I misconnected and was forced to an overnight stay at YYZ. Hotel was fully booked, I was told. I showed the duty manager the gold card. Yes, paid rack rates for a smoking room, but at 2 am after hours of airports and flying in CRJs, the very presence of a room in a fully booked hotel seemed like true gold to me.
