Hilton HHonors - Will coupon for free night count as HH stay?

Earlier this year I ran into a customer service issue at a Doubletree Club, and after writing to HH and speaking to the hotel manager I was sent a coupon for a free stay. When I redeem this coupon, will this count as a stay for HH purposes?

On a somewhat related note, if I am getting close to achieving the next level of HH status and am willing to shell out some bucks, would hotels generally let you book and pay for a stay without your even checking in?

In the past for me, if I had an incidental charge then it most certainly counted.

If it works like an HHonors award stay, then it most certainly does count (per HHonors website and my experience throughout this year).

Be sure to "buy" something, anything, even a soda! Have it billed to your room. Your "Be our guest" cert. will count as a stay.

You could just reserve one of the non-refundable rates, not stay and then ask for them to fax the folio to you. You will then need to submit this to HH to recieve your points. This would all need to be done if the points were not automatically posted to your account.

The other option would be to find a nearby Hilton brand hotel, make the reservation, check-in and then leave.
There is a Hampton Inn about 10 minutes from where I live that I do this at, when I need an extra stay or two. I would rather make a stop at the HI when I am out running errands then have to make a phone call (sometimes more then one if they do not fax it) as well as the fax to HH, etc.

There are a couple of other options that FT'ers use but the two above are the ones I use.
