This is not exactly earthshaking, but I can't decide about this and thought I'd call on the collective wisdom of FTers to help (or laugh).
I just got a brand-new laptop and am selling my older one to a friend. They use the same power adapters.
I had purchased a car/airplane adapter for a still-earlier laptop, which fits these two with a tip adapter. Then the original AC adapter of the laptop I'm selling went south. I replaced it with a universal Kensington adapter: AC, cars, airplanes and probably camels.
I can give my friend either (a) the Kensington adapter or (b) both the AC adapter that came with my new computer plus the car/plane adapter I had before I got the Kensington.
Advantages of keeping the new adapter:
1. It looks cooler than the Kensington adapter.
2. It keeps the new computer "intact" for warranty and how it feels.
3. It has fewer parts:
Kensington has four for AC use: input cord, brick, output cord, tip.
It has one, or two with the optional input cord. (Without it, brick plugs into outlet.)
4. For local use, which is most of the time, it's smaller/lighter than the Kensington unit.
Advantages of keeping the universal Kensington adapter:
1. When I travel, I just have to carry the one. (I start a 31-day trip next month.)
2. The six parts of the old car/plane adapter (input cord, brick, output cord, adapter from emPower to cigarette lighter plug, tip, tip adapter) tend to come apart at odd moments. Kensington has five parts (no tip adapter needed) in car/plane use, and they stick together better.
So, could some of FT's great minds pull themselves away from the burning questions of the moment and say what they'd do? I have about another week to decide.
