US Airways Dividend Miles (Pre-FlightFund Merger) - where to post miles - US or UA - thanks for advice!

Hey US friends...I have NW as my primary program - and end up doing almost all of my flying on NW/CO/DL. I have barely enough to squeak up to silver status.
Will be part of a group travel effort next month where we will be flying to Ireland on US Airways via Philly.
Trying to decide where to post my miles...and since I do relatively little on US or UA maybe you may be aware of factors I need to consider...
I have about 7K lonely US miles. My UA account is a little more active with about 34K miles.
Pro-US:
Will keep my small account active for awhile and with a few promos might be able to boost it up to 20K for potential use on a free ticket rather than having to buy magazines
Pro-UA:
I have more miles there anyway
In case bad days really come for US, my miles may be safer with UA
The flights Houston to Ireland will net about 9K miles round trip.
Not really a big deal in the grand scheme of things...but since I do not follow US or UA closely you may know something that I don't! Thanks and best wishes on keeping US airborn!
First, see if you can get US or UA to match your status so you can qualify for some bonus miles. If only one cooperates, they've made your decision for you. Other than that, I'd probably go with the airline that is more likely to be convenient (which includes more likely to be alive) and that's probably UA.

I would pretty much agree. The only other factor you may consider is if you are more likely to fly one or the other in the future. If you live in a city that has little or no service from US, then definately credit the miles to UA. If the opposite is true, than credit the miles to US.
Also, UA has far more partners and it will be easier to keep your UA miles alive for this reason.

Thanks Eric & Lurker...the status match thing truly had not crossed my mind...I will see what shakes out!

Well the trip is over - and thanks to you guys for the comments - and to other info found on this board. US did match my silver status. Between the silver bonus and the Philly Gofares bonus for the Houston-Philly segments - the flight wound up netting 7,197 bonus miles in addition to the regular mileage.
Incidentally...both flights were offering bumps on the way over IAH-PHL and PHL-SNN...but we were part of a touring group so unable to take advantage. We were ready to take a bump returning, but alas, no such luck of the Irish! (Though the DUB-PHL flight did appear full.)
Thanks again!

would definitely post the miles on ual. while both airlines are in trouble, the possibility of ual surviving is much higher. The chance of U survival is less than 50%. If U goes under, there is a good chance all miles will be lost.

I was planning to ignore him, since he posts something similar in most every thread, but he just made it up. No one could possibly establish a percentage for such an event.
Furthermore, our own Randy Petersen continues to advise accumulating miles in the US program.

Sigh, the same old mantra. Listen, credit to whatever program you will use the most and be done with it. There's so much more to life than worrying about FF miles and status. That being said, I'm not counting US out yet. If they can get this pt-2-pt network w/ CLT hub working the way I think it could, they should be able to turn themselves around. Then, they're a prime target for a takeover (probably by a NW or turned around UA or, if the gov't ever allows it, LH). Also, let's be realistic, not everyone wants to fly WN. Just like I won't stay in a Four Points or Motel 6 or Best Western or La Quinta yet will stay in a W, Westin or nicer Sheraton is the same reason I won't fly WN but will fly B6 or UA or US. (Yes, B6's service is far above WN.)
