Has anyone else noticed "Excellent" signal strength on the 802.11b/g connection while on board American flights?
They've also changed their verbiage about using electronic devices to include" only electronic devices where you can disable the wireless feature may be used on board"
Anyone know what this is about?

I heard that spiel about using devices where you can disable the wireless feature in the past 10 days. Some brand new afoot?

On United a month or so ago, they said "Cellular phones, including cellular phones with a 'flight mode' must be in the full-off mode throughout the flight." My phone is a PDA so they have to know what to look for...

This is probably a fellow passenger sharing his wireless non-connection (and his hard drive) with you...

and supposedly, there are AP's in teh belly, which communicate to the ground when near the gate about cargo and baggage loaded.
I haven't had anyone confirm that though.
I've sniffed the packets on the ground before though, and often get BAGSUAORD or something like that

For devices like my Treo 600 that are both a phone and a PDA device. I have to turn the phone portion off (it says "Wireless Mode Off" in phone mode to show the FA) but can still play mp3's through the flight, take pics, record video, read my downloaded email, play games, etc. Just no phone, SMS, web browsing, shoutcasting, or up/download email
