What are Sunday's like at Dulles? I am leaving on an 8:45am flight - and will need to return a Hertz rental car ...

Like most airports, IAD is generally quieter on Saturday evening (than other evenings) and Sunday morning (compared to other mornings). I've had no problem getting through security at that time on several occasions. Hope this helps.

Just went through this past Sunday morning (arriving at 7am for an 8:45 flight) and it was an unmitigated disaster.

Lines everywhere - their idea of helping was to have guys in yellow shirts standing on top of chairs yelling and waving their arms to say the line starts here. After being in the security line for 20 minutes (thankfully had done the online check-in at home), finally reached a TSA? guy who said the wait from there would be 12 minutes - 33 minutes later, had still not reached the scanners. Everyone had to take off shoes but they were still saying 'recommended' instead of 'required' so if you didn't take their recommendation, it slowed the line even further for all the 'secondarys'. Lots of families so stollers, car seats, backpacks, diaper bags, kids' rollerboards, etc.

It was a very ugly experience as some folks had evidently not allowed enough time and were very concerned about missing flights - I'm sure some did.

At times you can fire a cannon through the terminal and not hit anyone... (i.e. this past Sunday at 1pm)

Other times....AWFUL....(i.e. this past Saturday at 645am)

The wait was 30 minutes, and admittedly, the line looked worse than it was.... at least it kept moving...but what a sideshow! The line snaked from the detectors...through the line maze and then all the way down to the AA ticket counter....

I have a 7 a.m. flight out of IAD a few Sundays from today. I plan to do on-line check-in and carry-on luggage only. Is a 5 a.m. cab pickup from the Club Quarters in Downtown enough time to make it through TSA?

That would be a bit close. Your flight would start boarding at 6:30; figure a few minutes with no security lines and also riding the moon bus to your terminal, then walk to the gate. The upside is there will be no traffic, so a 45 - 60 minute taxi ride should get you to the airport in time. But if there is any line at all you could be toast.

Oh yeah, forgot about the moon bus - first time flying out of IAD - always connecting in the past. Thanks. Looks like no sleep next weekend.

That's a little conservative, IMO. At 5am on a Sunday, I would say 35mins tops to get from downtown to IAD; straight shot on E St expressway to 66 and onto the access road. Piece-a-cake :) If it was me, I'd leave at 5:30!
