Hampton Inn & Suites Salida, California
4921 Sisk Road, Salida, CA 95368 (n.w. edge of Modesto, CA)
+1.209.543.3655
70 rooms, near freeway access, several nearby restaurants.
Outside pool, small fitness room, self-laundry, small business center with Internet access, conference room for 40.
Some large King studios with Whirlpools, wet bar.
All rooms with fridge, microwave, 27” TV with Nintendo and pay-per-view, computer desk with free DSL, phone with modem port, convenience shop 24 hrs.
Hotel is new, all interior corridors, well-maintained and clean. Effective built-in window air conditioning. Good lighting throughout.
Breakfast included with stay – buffet with fruits and juices, cereals and milk, eggs and sausage, breads and toppings, yoghourt, coffees, tea.
I checked in late June 14, 2004, and was greeted and checked in by a friendly clerk, given a spacious room on the second floor. This is one of the better Hamptons, and it is a great alternative to the Doubletree in Modesto (difficult parking, conventions, not as accessible to Highway 99.) The hotel is very well kept and maintained throughout, everything works, the computer / work desk with lots of power access and free DSL makes it easy to work. I was assigned a large room near the end of the hallway, so I wouldn’t hear the elevator traffic, a nice way of serving business- and HHonors people.
My room (228) included sofa, table, chest of drawers with TV, lap board for writing / gaming etc. on bed, complete with remote, TV guide; wet bar with microwave and fridge; small closet with ten hangers, luggage rack, iron and board, extra pillows; computer / work desk with task chair. Side chair; bathroom with dryer, good towel supply, two soaps, moisturizing lotion and shampoo. Electronic card-locking door, free USA Today newspaper and express checkout in the morning.
The breakfast (served 6:00 to 10:00) was complete, though the sausage patties could have used an oil change, and the eggs were pre-formed into little egg tortillas. The selection of coffees was decent, with an “extra-strong” to decaf range, and hot water for tea. Hostess “Gloria” was efficient, and asked guests to fill out survey (strangely, she purposely avoided the only person dressed in business garb – me!)
The only possible negatives about this property: you will probably hear the louder truck traffic on nearby Highway 99, the lifeblood artery of the San Joaquin Valley, and the occasional train air horns passing nearby. The rooms are, in what I’ve come to expect from Hamptons, a bit thin at times, especially if you have rowdy floor-mates.
It seems rates may increase when the Modesto Doubletree is full with convention activity, as it was this week – my preferred (Internet AAA) room rate only was $98.10 without taxes (bringing the bill to $105.95.
I recommend this clean and welcoming hotel off a major highway, and (with the Modesto Doubletree) the only Hilton property you will encounter until you arrive in Bakersfield. (A new Hampton is under construction in Fresno, CA, which will be more than welcomed by HH members on business in the often-scorching or foggy valley!)
