Ok--I am loball compared to you guys.Since I have found this site and read many past posts, have wondered what rock I have been under.I always thought these programs were for businessman only.I understand if you travel alot in business,of course you will build points at a much faster rate than I.To think I could have been building points for years---I could cry. snif snif.I have had a sw card for years, living in az,I am married with a grown daughter---kind of grown husband and a 13 year old son.Found this site after doing my first bump or bumps a couple weeks ago for $1300 delta dollars and WHAT a HIGH!!!!!We vacation prob 2 weeks a year and plan on hiltons from now on.By using my points and click awards, getting a hilton optima etc--will I be dead before I could ever hope to cash in say the hilton honors australia or africa safari vacation award.?Is there anyone out there who does not travel alot that has racked up lots of HHonors points.I am doing a wash dc. 10 day trip and a hawaii 10 day trip next year and am excitedly taking all the advice I have found here to help maximize points/miles etc.How hard is it to accumulate 300,000 points say.Can only a frequent businessman hope to acquire that many----Thanks----I need to find a way to buy groceries online for points---LOL

Welcome to the Board! Remember, 300,000 HHonors points is "only" $150,000 worth of spending on your Hilton AmEx card. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif Also, watch for promotions (extra points for buying gas and groceries, etc). You can convert "stray" miles from several airlines (DL, CO, TW, UA, MX, to name a few) into HHonors points. Also, you can apply for a "mutual fund" HHonors account so your husband's "stray" miles can be converted into it too.
E-Trade offers up to 50,000 HHonors points for opening up an account with them, so if trading stocks is in your blood, you can get points (and miles) to come with it.

Good luck!

Welcome Wannafly.

A year or so past, it was harder for leisure travelers to accrue points in HHonors. Now, with the changes to the program allowing most rates to qualify, it is much easier. Coupled with this, the inclusion of Hampton inns etc in the program open up more points earning opportunities. The promotion with United flights also bring further points.

Remember you can transfer most US airline miles into your account, so if you have a few K of miles not doing anything, move them into HHonors

If you don't already have a HHonors card, join on line (you get a 1000 or 2 for this), also update your email online, again a further 1000 miles or so bonus. You can also sign you husband up the same why, and then combine the accounts into a mutual account. This allows HHonors points earned by both of you to be combined.

The best way to earn big is with the promotions. In the past HHonors have run promos that could net you 50000 bonus miles. For example, I received a targeted mailing yesterday from Virgin Flying club that offered 50000 bonus miles and gold status after 4 stays. OK, the targeting was rather poor for me, as I'm already Diamond.

You can of course use your safeways club card to earn United miles (250usd = 125 miles) and then transfer to HHonors (125 miles = 250 HHonors points).

Getting to a 100k + shouldn’t take forever, but whether you're be dead first, who knows http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif

And don't forget the tie-in with United Airlines through end of September - if you are a Mileage Plus member (it's free) you can cross-connect your Mileage Plus and Hilton Honors accounts so that when you fly on United you get the same number of HHonors points as the miles you fly, AND you get the United Milegae Plus miles as well.

Can you please explain the HH points equal to Mileage Plus promotion. I fly United a lot, and have not been getting this bonus. Thanks.

wannafly,

here is another way of bumping up your HHonors balance: sign up with mypoints (www.mypoints.com) and you'll get a number of bonus points for a variety of web surfing activities (usually 5 to 10 points). If you'd like to know more about this program, there are endless threads about its merits and especially its flaws under the Buzz forum (and more recently the S.P.A.M. forum), starting from at least a year ago.

Anyway, every time you accrue 1000 points, you can transfer them electronically to HHonors at a 1-to-1 rate (and the transfer happens very quickly). This could help you build up your balance more quickly, especially if you have a joint account with your husband and he joins Mypoints as well.

Good luck.

Did you get my lengthy e-mail on Am West, SWA and Hilton? I would have posted it to the board, but, it was too long.

Follow up?

I only need 5000 more points to get two Universal 2 Day tickets and am looking for a way to get those without a hotel stay. I already have the credit card too. My sister has 10,000 pts in her account. Is there a way to transfer them to my account? Can we turn her points into something else (like air miles or something) and then turn them into Hilton points in my account? There must be a way!!! I have already updated my profile for the 2000 pts. too. If I get my husband a separate account from Hilton, can I get enough points on his right away and can they be transferred into my Hilton account?

pointman

Off the top of my head-
you could open a Hhonors account for your husband, get the signup bonus and the two profiles updates, and spend some Mypoints if you have them. Have him get his own Hhonors Amex also. Also, if you have any spare ailine miles in a frequent flyer account that is a Hilton reward exchange partner, you could transfer those miles over to an Hhonors account. After all these bonus points post to his account, contact Hhonors customer service and have them combine your two accounts into one married "mutual fund" hhonors account.

Here is an instant 6,000 and a possible 46,000 HHonors if you spend 10 more minutes! Enjoy.

Call cusomer service and explain your needs. Very often they will extend a "courtesy" of additional points. I've had it done for me, so I know it is possible.

Find a friend with a Diners Club card. 2500 Diners Club points convert to 2000 HHonors points, and can be transferred into any account.

Another tip: if you're legally maried, ask your wife to enroll for new account online (1 K points) and update her profile twice (more 2 K points). Than you can combine the 3 K points in her account with yours.

Wow! My faith is renewed in HHonors! I updated my profile twice today (after reading the posts that it is working!) and then called HHonors. They comped my like 760 points to get me to 20,000!!! Thanks for the suggestion Davidlee, I never would have believed it would work until you mentioned it. Thanks to all the other fliers too!

dilly -- DL --> HH transfer is 1:2 (5,000 miles generates 10,000 HH points). Same deal with CO and UA. AA --> HH transfer is 1:1, and NW does not participate in the HHonors Rewards Exchange (http://www.hilton.com/en/hhonors/rewards/exchange.jhtml).

Jan 2, 02, 2:33 pm
You'll want to go with DL unless speed is not important. UA and CO use a completely electronic process that typical takes at least twice as long to get the HHonors points posted as DL's paper process (DL sends you the award and you mail the award to HHonors).

Isn't technology grand?

The DL process takes about two weeks including the round trip mailings ... UA and CO much longer usually (month +)

Other sources for earning HH points:
-hilton stays
-AMEX membership rewards points
-dining miles (then transfer the miles as described above)
-AMex or Visa Hhonors enrollment bonus, then daily spending with the card. (10,000 bonus, then 2 to 3 points per dollar spent)
-HH shopping
-E-rewards
-my points
-Countrywide home loans. I got 35,000 from this for a refinance.
-profile updates (2,000 points per quarter)
-there is possibly a telephone long distance deal with Hhonors but I can't remember.

BillMorrow
Jan 2, 02, 8:09 pm
If want to use AMEX points, launder them through Delta if time permits.

1 AMEX point converts to 1 HHonors point
or
1 AMEX point converts to 1 DL mile, which converts to 2 HHonors points

pointman
Jan 3, 02, 12:18 am
Actually, 1,000 MR poins convert to 1,300 Hhonors points but it's pointless because, as pointed out, going through an airline first will net you 2,000.

Lynne -- You need to call Delta and request an award code Z991 - 5,000 SkyMiles --> 10,000 HHonors points.

You will receive paper award certificates from Delta that you will have to mail to HHonors for credit.

3. GMAC Insurance quote (1000 HH)

Get Hhonors Amex (7500 bonus points) or Hhonors Visa (10000) - and then buy as many US Savings bonds are you are allowed, using those cards.

Stay at Hhonors properties.

Thanks to United's handling of a flight from Washington to London, my stays at two Hilton properties were cancelled. This means I'm about 10,000 pts short of an award level I'm seeking. They can give you up to 3000 points - for Customer Service Reasons - like if you call and they can't help you OR to pacify you in case of a complaint, etc. I once got that without asking http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif That's how I know about it.

If they won't just give it to you, get a GMAC insurance quote, get 1,000 points. Make sure you do it by phone instead of internet, it seems to post in 2-3 days that way. Do a search in this forum for the link, I don't have it handy. I believe it is also on the HHonors website.

The only miles that will transfer will be the AA miles - they may or may not make it in 30 days without paying AA an expedite fee.

That having been said, though, you can merge the two accounts into one (do a search on Mutual Fund accounts), and both accounts will reflect the higher status. In essence, you go from Silver to Gold.

TQ,

Do you have a MyPoints account? If you are a new member there are a lot of free Mypoints you can earn by taking surveys, visiting sites, clicking on emails etc. They also have a Tupperware promotion where you can earn 800 Mypoints for each purchase, minimum $10 GC, which you can then turn around and use the gift certificate to purchase a Tupperware product and earn another 800 MyPoints. These points post over night into your account. There is lots of information on how to earn free MyPoints over on the Spam thread.

Keep in mind that Mypoints transfers points into Hilton on Thursdays, so if you request the transfer on Thursday they will show up in your account on Friday. The transfer rate is one Hilton Point for every MyPoint.

I really think it's worth a try to see how many free and affordable points you can earn there. Even if you can't earn the entire 8K it should be a good start. Good luck!!

Hi everyone,

Need your help here. I've got a big 6-day NY trip coming up next month, from 8/2-8/8. I would really like to use the GLON award to pay for this trip, but am a little short on points. I currently have around 123k points, still about 27k short of the 150k needed for the GLON award.

If any of you can advise how to get a hold of 27k points quickly, in around a week's time frame, it would be tremendously appreciated. Granted, one of the way is to somehow obtain 7k, and buy the remaining 20k for $250. It may still be a better alternative than paying average of $200 * 6 ~ $1400 after tax for thet trip.

Much thanks in advance for your suggestions!

Using 10,000 miles from AA or CO, though the CO transfers take forever. Also, only good for orphan miles as the miles are worth more, IMHO, than the HH points, except at certain properties, i.e. Cannes Hilton, Rome, Waldorf, where the room rates are usually high. Of course, these are the places that are difficult to get award nights.

MyPoints.com transfers 1 to 1 with HH if you already have a account and balance with them. UA no longer converts to HH. I have transferred around 10K mypoints to HH in the last 6 months. The transfer is pretty quick. There is also Erewards.com. Then just buy the rest. Your time frame is a bit short though. Good luck and have fun. A previous poster asked if you had already checked for availability for the reward. That is a good idea before you go through all the trouble gathering points.

1,000 Hilton points here (but you may have less than 48 hours to get them as there has been talk of this offer expiring July 31):

Hi, I have 9500 points in an hhonors account which I want to convert to AA miles, but I need to get to 10,000 first - any thoughts on how I can get 500 points without checkning in to a hotel - free is good too!

You could buy 1000 pts for $12.50 if you don't have any other option

Are they still giving 500 points for joining mypoints.com?

I need 500 hhonors points in order to make the threshold for a conversion to AA miles. I don't have a Hilton stay in the near future and would prefer an option that nets me the points free - anyone have any suggestions?

You can buy 1000 points for US$ 12.50. Probably the quickest and cheapest way to go.

I agree, it looks like buying the points is the only way to go for a non US resident. I was hoping for some sort of signup bonus on the web or even a referral bonus somewhere, but $12.50 isn't going to break the bank. Thanks for all your help

Need 40,000 points for 2 nights at MUNICH CITY HILTON. All I need is 845 more points. Is my best bet to buy 1,000 points for $12.50?

I wanted to convert Continental miles, but read on the Hhonors website that they don't do this anymore.

Depending on your history with HHonors and status, HHonors may let you slide. It's worth a try, all they could say is no.

The purchase is your best option if you need the points quickly. Don't forget, you don't need to pull the points just because you are making reservation. You could wait to do that on the day of arrival. So if your trip is not for some time just wait. You never know where you could get some points.

There have been many, many threads devoted to earning Hilton HHonors points either to: Top off a Hilton HHonors account for an award, or Keep a Hilton HHonors account active to prevent the account from being closed, thereby forfeiting all of the points that were in the account.
This thread is devoted to offering all of the different ways to earn Hilton HHonors points, including limited-time-only special offers. This way, all of the other threads pertaining to this topic — especially future ones that will not have to be launched — will not be necessary.

Much of what is posted here can be found at the official Hilton HHonors (http://www.hiltonhhonors.com/index.aspx) Internet web site, where more details can be found about each offer.

Any assistance from fellow Hilton HHonors FlyerTalk members would be greatly appreciated.

I will update this first post as necessary to keep the information in this thread up to date.

I don't understand your airline section. I thought you were making a list of ways to earn Hilton points.

There are only a few airlines which allow exchange of airline miles for Hilton points like American, Virgin, Lan Chile, South African, Midwest, Aero California. I don't even know if all of these are valid any longer since so many of the airlines have dropped out of the miles to points exchange in the past year.

The list you have are the airline programs that you can earn miles with on a Hilton paid stay.

Diners Club and Amex Exchange are other ways to earn Hilton points.

You are correct — thank you for catching me on that, satori. I had it backwards.

One can earn miles on a partner airline, not Hilton HHonors points from traveling on that airline.

Such courtesy credits are not unusual. If you get turned down, just call back. Find someone in a cheerful (generous) mood. I think they can do up to 5,000 points credit.

And you might want to check out www.MyPoints.com

Earn MyPoints for reading e-mail. Transfer 1,000 MP into 1,000 HH points. Should take about two weeks I'd guess.

Excellent thread, Canarsie!! The way to maximize points and miles is the main reason for the existence of FT. And your initial post is a great glossary to which everyone can refer. Updating the initial post on a regular basis with the input of other FT'ers is invaluable in that we won't have to search through pages and pages of posts to find the pertinent information.
This is especially useful to me as Hilton is my secondary hotel chain and I'm not as familiar with the opportunities at Hilton as I am with Marriott.
Thanks for your work here.

Go, Canarsie! Great idea...

As I am replete with AA miles this year, I signed up on the HHonors website for the offer of 50% bonus miles instead of the 500 airline miles per stay. This offer is good through December 31, 1004 (I am thinking they may extend this in some modified way, as this is a longer repeat of a similar offer.)

As a Diamond member, I'm getting 100% base miles, of course, and 100% bonus miles (plus any other offers I can use, like Tokyo Narita Hilton's 2nd anniversary offer of double bonus miles, or their BB + 1k bonus...)

This thread bares watching!

Hilton HHonors Platinum Credit Card — Earn 2 Hilton HHonors bonus points for every one spent. Earn 3 Hilton HHonors bonus points for every one spent on stays at Hilton HHonors hotels in addition to the points you earn for your stay as an HHonors member. Additionally, earn 5,000 Hilton HHonors points after your first spend with the card. This card is valid only for residents of the United Kingdom.

Hi Canarsie,
The above quote from the credit card section should relate to UK pounds spent. Eg:2 HHonors points for every pound spent. 3 points for every pound spent at Hilton Hotels. All foreign currency is converted back to pounds on the card statement and then HHonors points awarded.

eBay Exchange 1,000 eBay Anything Points into 1,000 Hilton HHonors points. eBay Anything Points members may exchange up to 25,000 Hilton HHonors points per transaction in 1,000 points increments.

with the AA promo at points.com that runs through the end of June you can launder your ebay points through AA and get a 2-1 exchange rate, something like 5000 ebay points -> 5000 AA miles -> 10000 HHonors.

You should also be able to get 1000 points pretty easily from erewards (for $25 in erewards points). You should be able to earn the $25 by taking advantage of some of the earn points now offers. If you have more time and feel like reading some emails, the exchange rate for 3000 points ($50) is better.

Hilton HHonors lately have been atrocious when it comes to bonus point promos these past months. So poor, I've cancelled about 5 stays, used awards instead, and rebooked at competitors racking in a huge amount of points. Nevertheless here's a promo not listed that came with HH Visa Signature card:

FREE UPGRADE PLUS DOUBLE HHONORS POINTS FROM AVIS
Valid through 12/31/2004
Saturday Night required
Holiday Blackout dates apply
Details and reservations, go to avis.com/HiltonCiti
or call 1-800-831-8000 and provide coupon #UUHA016

Upon trying the link they provided, it didn't work. Therefore call that 1-800 number or Avis. If anyone has the working link page, please post it.

The best thing about e-rewards is the fact it is ACCOUNT ACTIVITY , if you are one of those infrequent users of Hilton properties and want to keep your account active / alive. You add a few miles, and update the last activity date - well worth it, if you have read the tales of woe :( from those who never raed the fine print and let their accounts lapse.

Ask for permission to overdraw/go into the red by 500 points. Assuming your wife has no status, it will take only $50 in charges to the room account to cover the deficit. It sounds nicer than asking 4A handout of 500, which you may be lucky enough to get.

Ask for permission to overdraw/go into the red by 500 points.

While they have done this for us in the past, this is no longer an option. They are usually generous though, if you ask nicely, and get someone in a "customer friendly" mood.

Does anyone know for sure whether transferring MembershipRewards points will keep an account active? It is mentioned above, but the letter I received from HH says "if you do not take one of the actions above..." - and the "above" is either a stay or points from HH Partners. The URL for the partner list does not list MR, but does list myPoints and eBay points. (Yes, I am writing to them to be sure. And yes, I have done a search, but no definite answer)

Avis appears to be the only car rental location where I don't need to have a corresponding stay (give your HH number to Avis vs, presenting your rental contract at the hotel to qualify)

Your remarks would therefore be better addressed to the moderator(s) rather than to the crowd.

Hmm sorry, but considering this thread has considerably more information than the sticky, what is the point of the current sticky? I would not consider 2 a gazillion, but hey, I am no mathematician.

Anyway, forgive my enthusiasm, I am new and clearly not enlightened about HHonors etiquete.

Did you look at the sticky? It has a link to THIS VERY THREAD!!!

(I did the good deed of adding this link to that thread, but there is a saying, "No good deed goes unpunished." ;) )

You can PM or e-mail the moderator(s) directly if you want them to do something. ONLY the moderators can make a thread a sticky. No need to "remain silent." But the mods don't read every single thread, therefore a request to the mods posted as you did may not get any response or action.

Hope this clears things up, and suggest you read more carefully in the future before posting.

While it lasts, Overstock.com via mypoints.com has 500 pts for purchase under $75. One $1 CD, video, dvd or book = 500 mypoints, transferable to HH 1:1. Apparently this offer is daily. My math shows an opportunity 1 night stay for 15 daily purchases of $1 plus shipping = $2.40/day or $36, and a 15 small gifts to give away for the upcoming holiday season.

clarification: while this lasts, it is cheaper than buying HH points to top off an account. Buy points for $12.50 per 1000, or buy two $1 items on two different days for $4.80 total to receive 1000 mypoints, to transfer to HH. In my experience points transfer relatively quickly, but not as fast as a HH points purchase. Give it a few days.

I just tried it and it said something like "you just earned 500 points. this bonus is only available once."

On the homepage it says (daily) for this, but now I wonder. Have you been able to get to 500 points more than once?

Thank you all for the information you have provided thus far — I really and truly appreciate it.

For your convenience, not only have I updated a lot of information, but I also have added many links in the original milepost in this thread. Many of the DARK RED HEADINGS (http://flyertalk.com/forum/showpost.php?p=2914902&postcount=1) are now also links. Simply mouse your cursor over a dark red heading (such as the sample one that I have provided in this milepost) and see if it is a link, which will result in an underline appearing under the heading. If no underline appears, it is not a link.

Please continue to provide helpful and updated information, as well as suggestions and corrections to any mistakes which I may have made.

Thank you all again!

my third 500 points posted to mypoints on the Overstock.com offer, all 3 were $1 CDs. Pretty easy boost to top off the HH account to an award level, but still waiting for the first 1000 mypoint transfer to catch up on HH. I can't imagine actually chasing this daily, but it was a fun exercise in cheap points.

If I was S.P.A.M. enabled, I would post there that $2.40 x 3 transactions = 1500 mypoints: 1400 needed for a $10 gas card, or $7.20 for a $10 gas card plus 3 CDs (not counting the 100 point remainder, which may as well accrue to Hilton), a 28% discount on gas. So actually, I will chase this daily for awhile to keep the gas tanks filled.

In addition, my son will have some fun on his Amazon account trying to sell these CDs cheap, where I believe the minimum shipping cost will allow us to recoup some of the $2.40 per, even if he sells some CDs at $0.01.

On the other hand, if unsold, I will have plenty of stocking stuffers for the baby boomers in the family.

Another possibility not listed in the above referenced thread is to "audit" your past international stays (if you have any) to verify proper point crediting. I noticed on my UK stays that HHonors postings were fraught with discrepancies (perhaps due to double exclusion of taxes or highly spurious currency conversion rates). Correcting these discrepancies (~400pts) made the difference for Diamond status for me for the year.

Call honors and ask them to loan you the extra points. Any good business will do this. Many simply give it to you. Only a lame company like Delta Airlines will refuse. If not, pay for it and take your business elsewhere after they refuse. Companies who refuse will usually cost you more money in the future when they find something in the fine print of their own contracts in which to deny you with.

Just to keep things up to date: with the Hilton Platinum AMEX card, you can now get five points/$ at supermarkets, gas stations, drug stores, and when paying for wireless phone bills.

I got my Hilton AMEX a little over a year ago, and got a second one (free) for my wife, since she does most of the grocery shopping. I run a lot of stuff through that card, and I think I've netted about 100,000 points with ordinary spending since I've received it. Not bad at all. :)

In addition, if you spend $20K/year or more through the card, you get an automatic Hilton Gold elite status for the next year. The rumor is that if you spend $50K, you get Diamond, but I've yet to see that confirmed.

I highly doubt that Hhonors, who's had a longstanding partnership with AMEX in various ways, would dare not give you points for booking through the AMEX travel website, especially for business purposes.
This is how they get a vast amount of their business, doing business with AMEX.

Now if you booked your stay on cheapscatedeals.com, then they might give you a hard time about getting your hhonors points.

Are you serious about this "show your keys" thing with National? Can't believe I haven't heard of it. 250 pts everytime? How exactly does this work?

When checking in, jingle a set of keys, say "I am driving a National rental car" and if the desk clerk expresses any uncertainty ask them to look it up and wait with a kind smile while they do so. It's a check-box on their computer screen. Hampton clerks often have never heard of it, while those at Hilton's other U.S. brands are familiar with it.

Meanwhile, depending on where you rent and what discount opportunities you have, you might review the HHonors list of car rental partners. (click each partner at http://hhonors.hilton.com/en/hhonors/points/points.jhtml)

I always use National for personal rentals because my employer cheerfully lets us use the corporate contract for personal rentals. For me, it's a nice perk to get about 65% off the public rate. For the company, the more rentals the better deal they can get from National.

go buy some bottles of coke or diet coke and get the reward. 14 20ounce bottles translate to 500 points and they post fast. and I believe that the first time they give you a bonus, which means even less than 14.

Have you tried calling CS to make your reservation? Anytime i have been shy a few hundred points, the rep has added them to my account for free. That's probably true, especially if you're at least a Gold. Worth a shot.

But let this be a little lesson for all of us -- those little 100 and 300 point opportunities may not seem like much but they could wind up being critical. For instance, I recently logged on and went to the My Way tab. It turns out you can often select an alternative to your VIP benefit. For Hamptons, it's an additional 250 points. For Garden Inns (where I'm staying these days), it's an additional 750 points. And for full service Hiltons, it's an additional 1000 points. All these are per stay.

So, if you're not all that concerned about the water and/or cookies, it's an easy way to get relatively small but cost-free points.

Regarding the coca-cola rewards: today, June 1, HHonors posted a pair of 500-point awards that I claimed on May 13. The threads in the Hilton and Delta fora report a lot of variability in how long it takes to post.

Agree with the advice to call and book the trip. Even if they won't gift the 110 points, you don't need the points upon booking. They'll book it, then you can call later to get them to charge your HHonors balance.

They'll book it, then you can call later to get them to charge your HHonors balance. This feature normally is used to avoid the fact that once the points are taken from your balance, they are nonrefundable. So you can book the trip in advance and maintain the ability to cancel it without losing points. But it also an be used in anticipation that you'll have the points later.I don't understand this.

It's been my understanding that, if I cancel an award res, they will re-deposit the points in my account. No harm, no foul. Is this because I'm a Diamond? Do others actually lose their points if they have to cancel an award res?

Thanks for the advice.

It sounds like the coke may be tight, though. The reservation has been booked for months. I'm leaving in four weeks.

I'm going to try to call and see if they'll let me get away with it. It's partially their fault (though I do take some blame for not confirming). I called to ask the point total for my reward reservation and was told "120,000, you just need 30,000 more to make it." Without checking first, I paid $25 to transfer AA miles and then found my balance to be 119,890! I really hate to spend another $25 to transfer 1,000 miles (the minimum).

Let me see what the agent says and -- in the meantime -- I'll buy some coke!

You might also want to try the 'earn points' part of the hhonors website-- you can usually wrap up a quick 500 points for purchasing flowers from ftd.com (you have to go through the hhonors site to ftd)

I want to go to NYC for a couple days in DEC. The hotel rates are $450+/night in almost every hotel in the city. I have some Hilton HHonors points, but need 26,171 more to get a total of $80,000 to stay 2 nights at Waldorf Astoria.

One option is to stend $261.71 and buy the points. Are there other options in obtaining these points with minimal expense?

I received a Hilton Amex card earlier this year and also a Citibank Hilton card as well. I have cancelled the Citibank card since I never used it and do not use the Hilton Amex either.

I was trying to get the easy 500 points with the My Way survey, but can't find "My Way" when I log into my HHonors account.

Any suggestions will be appreciated.

Sign up for an American Airlines Citibank Visa. First $250 of charges get you a 20,000 point bonus. Then you can transfer those to Hilton for 40,000 points since its a 2:1 ratio. Cost to transfer is $25. You can cancel the AA card then if you want.

Stay at a hotel that requires fewer points. 40,000 points for a room that costs $450 isn't that great of a deal for the NYC area.

jzafar
Aug 3, 06, 8:49 am
The hotels that take fewer points are still charging 35,000/night. The hotels are also kind of crappy from their pictures. I figured if I am forced to pay 35,000, why not pay 40,000 for a nicer place! The Hilton on Avenue of the Americas is charging 40,000/night, so I would prefer to go for Waldorf for same points.

The rooms at Waldorf for those dates are $500+.

I would just change the dates to stay another time but I am meeting up with my 21-year-old sister who is finishing up a college course that week.

You said you never use your Hilton Amex, but have you ever? 10k points for first use. Your location says Fishers, there are plenty of Hamptons around for under $100 (just not this coming weekend). Book online, reserve and pay with HH Amex:

assuming $100 room:

500 point bonus AMEX online booking
2500 point bonus 1st 4 stays with HH Amex
1000 base points
500 bonus points + points double dip
500 bonus points paying with HH Amex
150 Silver VIP Bonus (status with HH Amex - more if you are Gold/Diamond)
----------------------
5150 points for your 1st $100 stay.
If it is your first use of the card, 10,000 more bonus points puts you much closer.

It's not easy to find on aa.com
Mouse over AAdvantage, the mouseover Partners & Mileasge Programs, then click on Hotels. Scroll down the next page and click on Hilton. About halfway down the page you will see the information for converting HHonors points to AAdvantage miles, and vice versa.
The catch is, they charge a transaction fee per transfer (I think they actually are doing this via points.com) so you have to do the math to figure out if the transfer is worth it.

For general information about transfers to/from Hilton HHonors, including whether you can with Delta, login to the Hilton web site, click the link in the upper right to HHonors. Then click on Honors Rewards and then on Reward Exchange. There you will see the possibilities.

U can also post on FT's own Coupon Connection offering something to trade with someone who has 5K Amtrak points or Continental, Midwest (?), or American miles--any of which can become 10K HH in your acct.

Also, 10K Mypoints can become 10K HH.

There are opportunity category Hampton Inns where a free night is only 7500 HH points. They aren't the Drake, but you might find one in a convenient location near something worth visiting. I've stayed at one in Guntersville AL that wasn't bad at all.

Another option if you have the time and energy, erewards.com.
Although now that I think about it they may no longer be accepting new members. If you go to their homepage you'll be able to find out in under a minute.

Erewards, not the quickest way to earn HH points but 3k HH points every 90 days helps.
(Taking into consideration whether you can join erewards now and also that you receive surveys from them and earn enough ($50) to redeem for the 3k HH reward).

Hmmm, yeah go the credit card route. ;)

Another option that requires time and patience is MyPoints ( www.mypoints.com ). You earn points by clicking on e-mails, shopping via their shopping portal, and/or answering surveys.

You need to accumulate 5,000 MyPoints to redeem for 5,000 HHonors points.

(MyPoints can also be redeemed, at lower quantities of points, for gift cards at a large number of popular merchants.)

do you earn base points for parking charges while staying at a Hilton brand?

tia

edited to add:

and i have read the T&C's where i found this under "Accrual of Points", item 6 (bolding and underlining mine):

"Qualifying stays are those at all rates except otherwise specified in item 11, below. 'Eligible folio charges' for Hilton, Conrad, Doubletree, Embassy Suites, Hilton Garden Inn, Hilton Grand Vacations Club, Scandic and The Waldorf=Astoria Collection™* hotels shall mean: room rate, food and beverage, telephone, laundry, pay-per-view movies, entertainment and recreational facilities, and other incidentals charged to the Member's room.

so a more specific question to you all:

are parking charges considered "other incidentals" for purposes of accruing points?

Inside it says enroll today so you'll have as much time as possible to earn extra HH points so I'm assuming that it wouldn't go back to the begnning of the promo period (which would be very nice for me). Has anyone had experience that you got points through the whole time if you enrolled later than the start date?

marley:

1) Congratulations on your winter Caribbean stay. Not sure why you'd think we'd be so jealous that we wouldn't offer advice. Most of us have graduated from third grade.
2) There are generally three ways to earn HHH points:
a) Joining HHH and staying at Hilton hotels.
b) Using a Hilton branded credit card to purchase items
c) Buying them. Looks like 35,000 points will cost you $350. Not free but still a pretty good deal for a Caribbean holiday.

Oh, and the other one, is to find a friend who has 40k and have them transfer them to you at $25 per 10k points. I have them but I'm saving them.

From the Hilton website:
Need more points? If you’d like to buy more points to complete a Reward Reservation, you may purchase up to 40,000 bonus points per calendar year to be used toward any HHonors reward. Now when you purchase at least 10,000 HHonors Points at one time, your cost is only $.01 per point. If you purchase under 10,000 Points in any one transaction, your price will remain at $.0125 per point. You will need to allow 30 minutes for your account balance to update before you begin your Reward search

Here are a couple of additional "creative" options to consider:

1) Since you live in Canada, apply for the no-fee MBNA Starwood Preferred Guest Mastercard and accumulate 15k in Starwood points (easy with the bonuses), transfer to AA, then transfer from AA to Hilton at a 1 for 2 ratio. You will have to pay a small fee ($40 I believe?) to AA for the transfer, but nothing to SPG or for the MBNA card. Better yet, accumulate 20k in SPG points to take advantage of the better conversion rate (20k SPG = 25k AA = 50k HH points).

2) Take advantage of a current Best Western promo that expires end of August, 2007. Purchase $1500 U.S. worth of Best Western "gift" cards that can by used like cash at any Best Western hotel (assuming you would actually stay in Best Westerns at some point). That will net you 15,000 AA miles which you can subsequently convert to 30k HH points.

There are lots of other creative ways to come up with the points as previously indicated on FT. I would advise against purchasing the points, since that is lost money as far as I am concerned.

After reading the new HHonors policy Hilton no longer allowing rewards w/o all points in your account (http://flyertalk.com/forum/showthread.php?t=725655) I find myself in a dilemma. I was intending on staying at the HHV 6 nights 7/3-7/9/2008 - but I do not have enough points currently to reserve. Should I just reserve a paid room, and once I have enough points (probably around March), call the DD and try to get a Diamond Force points stay? Anyone have any insight on my probability for success?

The good news is I just booked reward flights to HNL last night, HOORAY!

The real question I guess is from other's experience, how soon does one need to book a reward stay at HHV? Will it be too late in March, or is there normally still availability?

We have no way of knowing whether it would still be available in March. Generally, they release a few rooms for reward stays and once they are booked, you are out of luck. Since July is high season in Hawaii because U.S. children are out of school and families go on holiday, I'd book the room asap.

Currently at 88,000 points. eRewards gets me another 7,000 for a $100 reward transfer, I can buy up to 40,000 points a year so I can theoretically get to 135,000 points. That still leaves me short of 15,000 points. Do any of the FT gurus have suggestions on the cheapest top-up options (and fastest too - my stay is scheduled for mid February!)

All ideas are most appreciated. :)

I have the Citi HH card already. Has anyone tried to get a points advance to their HH account?
(I've done so with Amex who have always accepted my request to loan me Membership Reward points - then again, that's Amex and exceptional customer service...!)

Do you have other sources for miles, like MR from Amex, or miles from AAdvantage etc? They can be transferred to Hilton accounts. BTW, even if you don't have an AAdvantage account, you can open it, buy AA miles and then transfer them to HHonors.

Or do you have relatives who want to give you some miles?

Edit:
With AAdvantage you can buy 40,000 miles for $1000, which gives you 80,000 points for $30 (transfercosts).

Does anyone have any experience with shopping through Hilton's mall? I too need 15,000 points and hate to just purchase them, I have some time before I need them. I'd rather have a tangible item if possible to go along with the needed points.

Why buy points when that is just money you could use to stay at the hotel and earn points? If you need almost 75K in points I say its probably worth it to just stay at the hotel at the best rate you can find and not go through the hassle of trying to accumulate that many points in a month.

Get a Citi AA card (https://www.citicards.com/cards/wv/showSearchResults.do?family=FAMILY_AADVANTAGE), which comes w/25k AA miles. You can then transfer the miles into 50k HH points ($30 processing fee).

Well, since you're leaving in mid-February, all of the credit card options mentioned above aren't viable since you have to wait several weeks for your card and make your first purchase and wait another month before the points post. I think your best bet is probably to go the double or triple base points route and spend some nights at a hotel. What city are you in? You also didn't mention if you are a Gold or Diamond. You would only have to spend $500 at a double base point hotel for 15K points w/ diamond. There is a double base points worldwide promo going on that has a massive list of hotels participating.

Tons of Triple Base Points promos going on too. https://www.hiltonhhonors.com/CRM/default.aspx?PLOC=MDTDP&PTYPE=DEST&PVALUE=NWEST&POFFER=912&PSURV=1

Or you can send 30 bouquets of flowers from FTD to your loved ones for $15k points! :p

Good point.

The OP failed to mention how much he/she would have to pay in cash for the planned 6-night stay (at the cheapest possible rate). That is a crucial piece of data needed to determine whether it will really be worth it or not to use the award stay -- especially if money is going to be spent to purchase some of those points!
