NZ apparently uses the UA lounge in HKG but I've read good things about the TG and SQ lounge. Are they *G? And has anyone had any problems accessing those on a NZ flight?
Thanks!

Can't say i've been into the SQ lounge, but have been in the UA and TG lounges.
UA lounge is nicer in terms of design, and they have some interesting foods - hot dogs, cookies, etc. But overall the food in the TG lounge is better (dim sims, fresh fruits, sandwiches, etc). TG lounge tends to get very busy though (at least when I was there).
They are next door to each other. I was flying on TG and was allowed in both lounges, no problems and they are designated *G lounges.
There is also an ANA lounge nearby those 2 other lounges on the upper level, but they wouldn't let me in there, but it did have a *G on it.

Interesting - so it DID have a *G sign but they would not let you in? What reason did they give? Are they technically allowed to do that?

TG lounge is never that busy when I am in there but UA lounge has been. I find food much better in TG lounge and tranquility also. Good selection of reading materials, drinks, food and ice cream. At least a couple of computers for internet (one in UA lounge last time I was there).
I have also had shower in somewhat cramped TG shower which can be welcome if travelling as part of a long itinerary (not sure if UA has one).
I have looked at ANA sign but thought it was part of a contract lounge operation (ie not an ANA operated lounge). Can't remember seeing star gold on lounge sign, maybe on ANA advertising itself though . . .

reason the ANA folks said no is they were supposedly about to close and they strongly recommended the UA or TG lounge would be better. I didn't complain.
UA has a shower, very nice bathrooms. I had an evening flight there last yr, and I think UA were leaving at the same time but I was flying out on TG to BKK so that was probably why the lounge was full.

I prefer the TG lounge and have been let in even when flying UA. It has seldom been crowded when I've used it, and the dim sum is great to nibble on before the flight. Two PCs hooked into internet and lots of interesting reading material, as BB notes. There is a First Class section to the right, but have not used this part of the lounge.
SQ is in the main part of the terminal, so not very convenient to the wings from which most other STAR carriers depart. The time I was planning to try to use it, I just couldn't find the place. It is very obscurely signed, and you really needa guide to locate it. Of course, you are likely to be met by that wonderful SQ "attitude" if you are not flying them, so be fore-warned.

Shareholder, but if SQ's lounge is a *G lounge then officially there shouldn't be a problem accessing it, right? (Attitude I can deal with but I just want to make sure I've got the rules right!)

Yes, Fliar, you should be able to access any lounge with a Star Gold logo displayed, provided you are flying out same day on a Star Alliance carrier. Here's the official word (http://www.staralliance.com/star_alliance/star/content/SA_gold_member.html):
Star Alliance Gold members and a guest can access lounges around the world -- no matter which class of service they travel in! Just look for the Star Alliance Gold sign outside the lounge and present the ticket for your same-day Star Alliance flight, your boarding pass and your frequent flyer programme card featuring the Star Alliance Gold logo.
Call me a geek, but I have a printout of that page tucked in my travel documents for when I meet uncooperative lounge agents!

Everytime I try to use the SQ lounge in KUL I get told to visit the TG lounge (Even if i'm flying on SQ!), this is despite the SQ lounge have a *G logo on the outside. (or at least I think i remember it did!) Anyhow the TG lounge in KUL is nicer. I've had a chance to sticky beak in the SQ lounge a few times.

I didnt think SQ lounge in KUL was *G.
But then the TG lounge at KUL is better anyway (SQ is very small and limited amenities)! Although no where near as good as MH's at KUL.

[This is a BlondeBomber post--for some reason this computer won't let me clear the cookies]. I will shut computer down so hopefully Ferrari is not compromised bu unauthorized posts under his handle. Logging out doesn't help.
Just back in TG lounge in HKG. Checked "ANA" lounge again and there are not Star Gold lounge signs. The only Star Gold advertising may be associated with the ANA signs but I did not see mention of Star Gold on the big sign outside or on the ANA area inside the lounge.
TG now has at least 5 high speed internet access computers.
Nice fresh veggies, dim sum, sandwiches, buns, snacks, other hot and cold food; also ice cream (green tea, sesame, choc), several kinds of beer, juice, coffee etc. Lots of reading material, great views of the airport. I really like this lounge -- quiet and relaxing. Highly recommended (and I haven't even been in the first class side!)

I believe you have another term for the latter, said term is more widely used in NZ than Canada.

Yes a little disconcerting to see someone else's name pop up. At least I know ferrari and tried to help but couldn't clear his cookies anyway I tried.

Does any one know if the airnz partners gold elite card be used for the star alliance lounges ?
Can they take a partner in ?

From the pic of a card shown here http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/17683520-post112.html I'd say no as the *G Gold appears not to feature, but others can hopefully provide a definitive response.
Certainly a NZ*GE can take a guest into any *A Lounge.

Officially no as there is no *G logo on the GE partner card (the *G logo is obviously photoshop removed from the GE card). But sometimes you do get away with it with lounge agents not checking carefully as they look identical to the GE card.

GE partner is effectively a free Koru membership but with the semi-inherited GE status. They can guest one person into a lounge (compared to 5 guests for a GE). They can select seats including space +, subject to the same rules as a GE. They also get the luggage tags, premium check in, priority baggage handling, etc.

On upgrades and on the plane do they treat them more like Koru Club?
ie do they get the headsets and newspapers ?

Those are not official benefits for *E in any case.
This is a very odd thread necromance.

The do get the upgrades on the plane like headsets and papers, according to a flight attendant I spoke to once, a GE partner comes up as Gold Elite on the flight manifest so they do not distinguish between the two.
As mentioned above these are not official benefits so they could potentially take them away from us. I am unsure about partner cards getting you into non-NZ operated lounges as I have not had any experience with this, but as mentioned above the TG lounge is better than UA in Hong Kong, but SQ lounge is always worth a go.

Yes the TG lounge is nice
I was there in March this year as a Jade/Koru club .
Later this month I will return catching a Air China from Hong Kong so will try the Singapore Lounge and the Air China lounge (this time as a GE)
ps I have not allocated my partners GE membership hence the questions ..hate to say it has more perks than it really does

Well, my wife's GE Partner card certainly didn't get her into one of the US lounges at PHX. Mind you, the dragon was not in a particularly friendly mood. My 8yr-old daughter was my guest, but, as they wouldn't let all three of us in, we decided to wait by the gate.

The TG Lounge is not the the NZ 'partner lounge', so I'm surprised you gained access just on the strength of your Koru Club membership without being *G.

I have been intermittently amused/confused by that too, but have seen plenty of photocopied Koru membership cards sitting by the agent when entering the TG HKG lounge when NZ38/39 are there.

I am happy to try to request access at any lounge (and sometimes gain access when its not in the rule book) but I would not tell anyone you can when you may not be able
