For a flight from SEA to HGK, I was told by Northwest that I need to purchase a "B" class fare (very expensive) in coach to be able to upgrade with miles. Does anyone know a way around this?

Go to the main FlyerTalk homepage and scroll down till you see the link to the Northwest section.
At FlyerTalk, there is a specific section for each airline, hotel company, car rental company, credit card, and global alliance, plus general topic boards, such as this.
