I did not realize that the terminals at LAX are owned by the airlines and not leased space.

Virgin Atlantic said last week that potential problems at LAX were part of the reason it wanted to delay delivery of the A380. Virgin works out of Terminal 2, which is operated by LAXTWO Corp., a non-profit mutual benefit corporation whose members are Air Canada, Northwest and Hawaiian Airlines, survivors of the airlines that built the terminal in the mid-1980s.

It was designed to handle two 747s simultaneously, and accommodating an A380 would add "several hundred folks to the flow," a LAXTWO official said. "The seams start bulging a little bit."

Changes for an A380 will need to be funded by Virgin because LAXTWO member airlines don't want to put that capital at risk, the official said. Two of the members are in bankruptcy and the other hasn't made a profit in three years.
