WHAT: Iberia has reintroduced its sales fares from the US to several cities in Africa and the Middle East. The deals aren't as great as last time, but they're still good.

WHERE: For travel to Beirut, Dakar, Malabo (Equatorial Guinea), Johnannesburg, Cairo, Istanbul, Tel Aviv, Casablanca, Marrakech, Tangier

WHEN: Fares are valid through June 30th, and then from September 1st to October 31th, 2004 and December 15th to December 31st.

HOW MUCH:
These are sample fares to Beirut, Lagos, Dakar, Malabo (Equatorial Guinea), or Johannesburg from:

New York -- $761 round trip + tax
Boston/Washington DC -- $761 round trip + tax
Chicago -- $901 round trip + tax
San Francisco/Los Angeles/Seattle -- $851 round trip + tax

--Fares to Cairo, Istanbul, Tel Aviv, Casablanca, Marrakech, and Tangier are slightly lower.

--Most fares are slightly higher for travel before June 30th.

HOW TO BOOK:
Go to www.iberia-usa.com >> online sales >> special offers for more information.

WHAT ABOUT THE MILES?:
--Frequent flyer mileage accumulation on Iberia for low fares is
poor, but you may earn 30% miles in American's AAdvantage program. Perhaps you'd get the full on AA miles on the AA operated flights?

--If you elect to earn points in the "Iberia Plus" program, you will
earn double points for flights before June 30th. In addition, you will receive an additional 25 points for enrolling online. Probably not worth the hassle.

Some great fares - too bad IB doesn't fly to the countries I go to.

True, but this is still much better than the going rate.

I just paid 1700$ USD for YUL-BEY...this is quite the deal, although good mileage accumulation would be an issue for most people.

JNB tends to be the one of the cheapest Africa destinations - if not the cheapest. And all of the cities IB flies to tend to be less expensive than the places I usually need to go - usually Yaounde or Douala - this summer I'm going to Ouagadougou. Many African cities never see sale fares lower than $1300 low season and $1800 high season.

I've read the African continent has the highest revenue per mile flown in the world.
