US Airways Dividend Miles (Pre-FlightFund Merger) - UA to move at RDU
As part of the code share and Alliance interest for RDU and ORF based FTers from an email I received. So much for easy check in at RDU and using the Club when on UA. Maybe US will move?
As a courtesy to our valued customers, we wanted to notify you of an impending change to our facilities in advance of your next trip on United.
This summer, United will be moving its ticket counters and gate facilities in the airports at Raleigh-Durham, NC (RDU) and Norfolk, VA (ORF).
On May 12th, United operations in Raleigh-Durham will move to new facilities in Terminal C from our current space in Terminal A. Curbside check-in and self-service United EasyCheck-in(SM) units will be available at Terminal C, and our new gate will be C21.
Also on May 12th, United operations in Norfolk will move to new facilities in the South Departure Terminal. Curbside check-in and self-service EasyCheck-in units will be available at the South Departure Terminal, and our new gate will be B27.

What would cause UA to move facilities at ORF? I can't imagine the reason. Their Ticket Counter has been in the same place for years. They don't seem to be very crowded. Since ORF converted the former baggage claim area into tickets counters I guess that is where UA is planning to move? Of course, when I look at the compass I'd call this the North Concourse and their curent location the South but that's a minor matter. Maybe ORF is offering lower rent on the less popular (read farther away) side? For me this will be merely an inconvenience nothing more.
Now, let me begin bI&^&%ing about the gate change. Today they operate out of 18 which is now the first gate on the left. Use to be the 2nd gate (16 was first) prior to the elimination of that gate when UA pulled out of mainline service to ORF. TSA now occupies the former Gate 16 space. The planned new gate for UX of 27 is at the ABSOLUTE farthest point away. Why in the hell are they moving? What again is the benefit? I just cannot understand the reason. Not to mention the cost of moving? What's the point? Another of what appears to be needless change.
If anyone can shed some light on the rationale for the change would be helpful.
The UA counter area at ORF always looked cramped to me. Sometimes the line snakes around and blocks access to the escalator to the gate.

United is joining AA in RDU Teminal C while Terminal C is demolished and rebuilt without taking it out of service???? More fun for us all.

Terminal C is a hole, and will get much worse before it gets better. Why is UA doing this?
I'll miss sitting on the other side of the wall from the Delta club and getting Tmobile service.
I would imagine that they will be joining US and WN in their concourse. A great move, as it will mean not having to reclear security if one happens to have a connecting flight in... ORF.

UA is moving in ORF/RDU because Atlantic Coast holds the leases for the current facilities and will be using them for Independence Air. Ergo, UA needs to find a new home. I agree that it will make US-UA connections and US Club use in RDU very difficult.
Expect to see more of this as the UA-ACA relationship ends.

you shouldn't, since the AA club has it too.

Now that makes good sense. Had not thought about that. While I don't like it can't really be upset about it now. Thanks for pointing out the obvious. I did not think Independence Air would serve ORF. But I guess they will eventually.

As far as the gate is concerned, the original post says that UA will occupy gate B27 in ORF after the move. I don't recall any A or B designation on gates they are strictly numbered, except for SW which turned on gate, Gate 3, into gates 3A and 3B by adding a jetway door on the other side of the gate area. Pretty smart if you ask me.
In ORF gates 1 - 9 are located on one pier and gates 17 - XX ( don't recall the highest gate number, perhaps 25) are located on the other pier. I think gate 25 is the farthest gate and is used by DL. But I could be wrong, CO might use gate 28 and 30 on the other side of the extended pier. Whatever it turns out to be it will still be a VERY long walk. Further this does not fit with UA's pattern of co-locating assets with US (well really US moves to UA territory in other airports). UA could have used one of the vacant gates in the same pier that US uses. That would have made sense to me.

IIRC, the Admiral's Club is very far from C21.
One of the previous posts mentioned ACA's ownership of the old gates. I guess the good news is that UA may get them back after Independence does Ch 7. Shouldn't take too long.

I could have sworn that the arrangement at ORF was:
one pier: US/WN
other pier: everyone else

You are correct.
I just walked by today at RDU and they have the UAX signs up at 2 gates. Opposite end of the terminal from the Admirals Club. They were rewiring the gate check in stands for the computers I guess.
I wonder if AA will let US/UA elites use the preferred screening line-not that I have ever had to use it because the security line has never been that long for me.

UA/US connections should not be a problem at RDU...since RDU is not a connection city, If you were to make a connection in RDU unless you were doing some convoluted mileage run I have no idea where you might be going.

Any 1Ps or 1Ks out there tried the elite line in terminal C? I'm doing UA from C for the first time on Monday.

The AAdmiral's club is down near gates C12/13

Was chatting with the Club reps and they mentioned they have had a few problems with pax connecting at RDU on UA/US. I guess it does happen.
Flew UA out of Terminal C about 10 days ago (RDU-DEN on a CRJ, which I will never do again, but that's another story). It was a horrible hell hole. The lobby is designed for one airline (it was designed to be AA's hub), and has baggage screening equipment taking up half of it. There is no room for people. The new UA counter agents (all of the old agents work for ACA as well) didn't even know how to get passengers on new flights when theirs were cancelled. There is no priority check-in lane, and the regular check-in goes up to kiosks.
Once past the two security lines (yes, only two), the services offered were horrible. The terminal has not been kept up by AA very well.
Once to the UA gates (which, oddly, are at the same end of the terminal as the AA gates...given there are only 2 airlines that use the terminal, you'd think they could put UA at the other end), there wasn't enough room for all of the UA planes. So, they had to move our aircraft to the gate from a parking space once the flight before us had departed. Made for a half-hour delay.
It doesn't look like I will be making too many trips on UA metal out of RDU.
