Has anyone already succeeded booking a train between FRA and QKL (Cologne) or ZWS (Stuttgart) railway stations? LH markets the trains on these two routes as if they were real flights. They have LH staff at the stations who issue boarding passes for the trains and the connecting flights. Baggage can be checked both ways. Miles can be earned and also burnt when traveling on an award ticket from e.g. Lufthansa or United.
I am holding a confirmed award reservation booked with UA going JNB-FRA-QKL. I wanted to book the same itinerary with US for my wife and they told me they could not do it. Insisted they double check because the whole Star Alliance thing must be pretty new to all of them. While I was on hold I kept reloading my reservation page on the internet. After a few minutes it showed the segment FRA-QKL confirmed! After another few more minutes, the res agent came back on line and told me he could not book it. When I said I had already seen the segment being confirmed he transferred me to someone from the DM department. They were clueless but promised to check and get back to me within the next couple of days.
Does anybody have the exact wording of the rules for award travel with regard to which flight numbers are or are not allowed? Me and my wife want to travel together, of course, and the flight connection JNB-FRA-CGN has a four hour layover in FRA whereas the trains run hourly and the whole trip takes less than an hour!
