I was on the phone yesterday with Amex credit, trying to get higher limit on my new DL Amex (the last Amex card with double miles for home improvement charges). I already have a Starwood Amex, so I knew they would be tight with the new card.
The guy I spoke with was new - he put me on hold twice to get help, and he didn't sound very well versed in what he was doing. I talked with him about how difficult it is to get a higher credit line with Amex vs. other CC's, and that some CC companies will do asset verification - but not Amex. He said, yes, they (Amex) only work off of income, and "if you claim you make $175K or more a year, they have to have documentation to verify it", like tax returns.
I've never read a thread on this (that I can remember). I doubt that anyone will post how close they are either way to $175K (and whether they had to send verification or not), but to me, the information was interesting.
