Telefonica MoviStar just started offering Duplo, an option that lets you add a second SIM card to your account. They are marketing it for handsfree/car and regular handset use, but I can see lots of cases where this would be useful. Both phones ring at the same time, and you can make 2 different calls at the same time.

I wonder how long before other carriers offer this?

T-mobile has done this in Europe for about 10 years, the other carriers probably do it too.

Car phones in europe were of course always GSM and most people had them installed since it was so much more powerful than a handy. 3 Watt compared to .5 watt.

I have this on KPN in the Netherlands, damn shame no operators in the US offer this.

Carriers here in the US suck. I can have ten phones at home all ring at the same time, but only one stinking GSM handset. I wish I could have a few phones so that I wouldn't be SOL when I forgot the phone at home or something.

SwissCom's had this for a number of years. I used to take advantage of this service to keep my car phone and mobile up and running. Now, if only there were a more convenient way to have one phone and two numbers, I'd be happy.

Amazingly this is a standard feature of the GSM system, but hardly any operators have implemented it, it's mainly seen in Asia. I'd love to have additional numbers on my SIM...

I had the 2-numbers-one-SIM thing on T-Mobile 5 years ago when they first launched as VoiceStream. The second was ostensibly for fax, and was included FREE with the line. Sure enough, if someone sent a fax to that number, it would wind up in your voicemail, from which you could forward to a fax machine. It would also arrive directly to my 9000il. But switching the handset, a 6190, to Line 2 would allow you to make calls from the other number. Somewhere around 2001 the second line disappeared, and customer service vehemently denied it had ever existed.

About four years ago, there was a phone I saw in Europe that would take TWO SIMS and let both ring through.

cannot remember who make it thought, I would guess it was siemens.

I've never seen a phone that will take 2 sims AND let both work, the Benefon TWIN let you switch the sim (so only one at the same time) and batteries that take 2 sims and let you switch.

Although, now that I think about it I am remembering a bit more. I think it was a motorola phone and the whole point was that it had TWO phones in the one casing. That was the way they could use the two. Somehow, they had the two phones using the phone mic and speaker and KP.

I hate Motorola. :D

They let me play with their WristTac watch phone at Cebit back in 2000, but it never hit the market :(

We've had it for a while as Dads car has an inbuilt phone facility (Merc S Class), a bulky Nokia in the centre armrest. To activate the one in the car you dial *#13# , I think

I've seen a feature offered at the Carphone Warehouse in the UK where you can have two SIMs built into one cell phone
