Hi all,

I seem to recall that Harrods in London and AMEX hold a 10% discount promotion for all AMEX member for one day every year.

Any idea when the next one will be?

Thanks,

It happens throughout the year. There is always one Amex 10% day near Christmas and one in the spring. If you have a UK Amex card, they tend to send out flyers near the time of the promotional dates. I believe the Harrod's calendar on their web site (available only for the current month) will also list the 10% days for Amex when they occur.

It's usually the third or fourth weekend of the sale period, which means mid Jan and mid July. The discount is only on sale items, I think, not full priced merchandise, so you always run the risk that anything you want in the sale will already have gone by the time the Amex promo comes around. That said, I have bought things on these weekends before and its a good 'no strings' promotion.

Generally Harrods is so stupidly over-priced anyway, that even with 10% off you can still find the item cheaper elsewhere. But then price conscious people don't tend to shop there much I suppose. And there's the owner of course, another very good reason not to shop there.

Now, now Dave whatever could be wrong with the Pharaoh of Knightsbridge? (or should that be Geneva?) ;)

Don't even get me started on him! I'd probably end up being kicked off for violating the TOS; suffice to say he's a very nasty piece of work!

I have a friend who works closely with this person (!!) and enjoys it immensely .... she thinks he's a fantastic guy.

In my experience, the 10% discount is on just about anything, except for the shops within a shop, where other shops (mostly designer labels) operate in their own name inside Harrods.

The way it works is that you get charged full price to your Amex card, and you will then see a 10% credit from Harrods on your statement dated the same date as the transaction. I've always wondered what happens if you use a non-UK issued Amex card.

This is probably the better way to do it - just go through the transactions at the end of the day (or whenever), credit 10% to the cards with the UK country code. It's much easier than making sure all staff know and check whether the cards are UK ones when putting the transactions through.

I don't think they make a differentiation between UK-issued cards and non-UK-issued cards. I have always made purchases on the 10% day with my US-issued Amex and I have never failed to receive the discount.

In my experience, Harrod's also applies the discount differently on Harrod's cardholder 10% days and Amex 10% days. When I use my Harrod's card, I am charged the full price and a 10% credit shows up on my statement. On Amex 10% days, the 10% discount has been applied at the register.
