I got an e-mail today from Hampton Inn offering to let me know about little known American landmarks -- and the Hampton Inns that are close to them -- at www.hamptonlandmarks.com. I looked at the listings for my own state (Utah) and for states I will be traveling to next month. Well, I don't think Hampton Inn has all the bugs worked out of its database.
Most noticeably, it said if you want to go see Salon No.10 in Deadwood, SD (where Wild Bill Hickok was shot), the nearest Hampton Inn is in Rapid City. Huh? Did Hampton Inn forget that it has a property RIGHT THERE IN DEADWOOD? I've stayed at the Deadwood HI and will do so again next month.
For Wyoming, it told me to go see Independence Rock, which is about 30 miles away from the Hampton Inn in Casper. But it told me that the closest Hampton Inn was in Cheyenne (in a completely different part of the state).
For Utah, it suggested visiting the Golden Spike National Historic Site (which I have been too and highly recommend (along with Saloon No.10 and Independence Rock)) but it wants me to stay at a Hampton Inn in Salt Lake City. Hum, the Hampton Inn in Ogden, Utah, is much closer.
This is not a complete listing of all the anomalies I found, but you get the point. I'm wondering if Hampton Inn is only listing properties that paid to participate in its landmarks program. But, if so, then why would the landmarks database include so many landmarks that are far from where it has participating properties?
