I am traveling to Singapore for a week in May and wondering which hotel is better - the Marriott or the Conrad Centennial? I am Gold Marriott rewards member and Diamond Hilton member. Which hotel is likely to provide me with room upgrade and better service.
Thanks for your input.

I've never stayed at Marriott in Singapore. Two months ago I spent two nights at the Conrad Singapore. The service was very good. As a gold, I paid the extra S$36 to be upgraded to the executive floor. I think it's worth the extra US$25. The breakfast was excellent. Good smoked salmon, fresh fruit, tasty warm dishes, fresh pastries, refreshing juices and my favorite, tamago!!! Afternoon tea was not bad. But the evening hors d'oeuvres was outstanding. It was a nice light dinner, if you ask me. Enjoy the sumptuous spread with a complimentary glass of champagne and you are all set to go to spend an fascinating evening at the Night Safari :)
The health club was nicely equipped. The pool like well-maintained.
Beds were comfortable. Bathroom was all marble.
Location of this hotel may not be the best. But taxis are cheap in Singapore.
If I didn't spend the extra S$36, I would still have been able to enjoy breakfast in the lounge.
I highly recommend this property.
I also stayed at the Four Seasons Singapore. It's probably one of the cheapest Four Seasons property. I paid only S$280! Despite the low price, the rooms and service was better than what I experienced at other Four Seasons properties such as Chicago (on Delaware St), Las Vegas, Vancouver, New York (57th St), and Toronto.

As a HH Diamond you shouldn't even have to spend extra to get the upgraded room (with fax machine) at the Conrad, and i echo everything the previous poster said.
The Marriott has a cool location factor on Orchard and on top of the MRT station, but i've never stayed there...and probably never will after experiencing the Conrad on my last several trips to SIN.

I have not stayed at the Marriott, so can't comment on that.
I did stay at the SIN Conrad, and this is just MHO.
My favorite - HKG Conrad - just NO comparison
Close second - BKK Conrad - just a notch below, still a great property
Disappointing - SIN Conrad - Not even close to the other 2
YMMV, but that's my opinion.

stayed once at the Marriott (no status) - screaming children echoed troughout the long marble hallways downstairs (on MORE than one occassion). Room small, oddly shaped, dingy.
Conrad - I prefer this location to Orchard Rd, quieter, etc. Have stayed many times but less now b/c I got upset with their changing rules about upgrading to exec. level and club privleges, first for gold then for diamond. Nevertheless the lounge staff is exceptional - and they are the only club I have been to that serves DECENT champagne during cocktails! (most don't serve any).

I have stayed at both hotels albeit not recently at the Marriott. The Conrad is by far the better option for the reasons already mentioned. The rooms at the Marriott are small, cramped and tired looking. The central location of the Marriott, being on Orchard Road, is a plus if you like to be in the shopping district. But eveything is kinda spread out in Singapore anyway so sooner or later you're gonna have to take a taxi.

Had a wonderful stay at the Conrad in Feb. Great service provided by the staff! Location is not bad with taxi just outside of the hotel and MRT just 5 minutes walk.

I have not stayed at the Marriott, but spent two nights at the Conrad in March. Staff at front desk and in exec lounge are outstanding. Very friendly and gracious.
I liked the location as Orchard Road is a zoo. You can also walk over to the Long Bar at the Raffles Hotel for a Singapore Sling :)
Room seemed a bit smaller than Conrad HKG, but I will definately stay here again.
BTW, go to the afternoon tea in the exec lounge for the freshly baked scones. Served hot with cream and raspberry jam. I had the chocolate chip. Yum! ^

As a Diamond I'd say the Conrad would be the best bet. I am 100% sure you will get a complimentary upgrade along with access to the Executive lounge.
(I stayed at both the Conrad and the Marriott on a recent trip. I had Pricelined the Marriott for $55 USD/night, and thought that it was very nice. The room/floor appeared to be recently renovated.)

Like Chapel Hill Guy, I've not stayed at the Marriott but have just had a very pleasant (first, but certainly not last) stay at the SIN Conrad. Even though the Executive lounge was closed for a week (for "refurbishment", I believe), the "Salon by the Pool" was open for Business/Executive floor guests for breakfast, afternoon tea, and evening cocktails/snacks (with a nice selection of food and decent champagne, as estnet and francophile have described).
In Singapore, I've always been treated very well at the Sheraton Towers, but the Conrad Centennial may make me rethink my loyalties!

I agree with the many others above -- I haven't stayed at the Marriot, but I thoroughly enjoyed the SIN Conrad. As for the ordinary rooms vs. Executive Floor rooms, I was told that they are exactly the same except for the added fax machine on the Exec floor. (Of course, upgrade from room to suite is something different.)
I'll certainly go back to the Conrad in Singapore.
My 2 cents.

Stay at the Conrad, book the Exec Floor (it's worth it to guarantee the lounge), keep your fingers crossed for a suite upgrade. We were moved to a suite after the first night.
