I would like to convert my AMEX points to AA but have been told not possible.
Has anyone out there in FlyerTalk land been successful in converting their Amex points to AA and how?
Thanks

Conversion is possible but expensive. Please do a search here or in the AA forum.
You might also want to look at transferring points to Starwood Hotels and then onto the airline - check with the Starwood forum or the SPG.COM website.

Maybe someone should create a sticky thread about this (well, conversion to [name any airline that AMEX doesn't directly support])? It seems to get asked over and over and over and over, and now that we have sticky threads it seems a good candidate for one for this section.

Currently it appears that you can get up to 50,000 miles into the AA program, but it will cost you 106,383 AMEX MR points.
Take a look at this thread (and see my post in the thread).

Essentially you would convert MR points to US points, to eBay anything points to AA points. 106,000 MR points = 106,000 US miles = 47,700 anything points = 49,918 AA miles.

Based on comments in other threads, I think there is some concern among FTers that publicity of such "schemes" might result in their overuse so that they would be shut down. As I remember, so many people converted UA miles to Starwood when UA was approaching bankruptcy that Starwood was forced to shut down that conversion.

I'm getting old. Which one was it that UA could be moved to? Hilton?

Yes, it was Hilton HHonors that you could move to but no longer can.
You can still move UA to Diners Club.

It can be done if you have a lot of MR points at hand. You can convert 235,000 MR points to 235,000 Mariott points. This will get you 120,000 AA miles AND a free WEEK at any Mariott up to category 5 (of 6). That is the best deal I know of and I did it successfully this January, took less than a week from Amex all the way to AA. Side benefit: you can transfer miles to a family member in this way, since Mariott allows you to claim the award for yourself or immediate family.
Actually, I transfered 470,000 points to Mariott and got two of these awards in the name of my wife - the 240,000 miles made her a 2 MM with AA and so gave her lifetime Platinum status - which she would have lost otherwise since she did not fly 50,000 miles in 2003. So: 240,000 AA miles, lifetime AA Platinum for my wife and 2 weeks of free hotel stay - not a bad deal! :)
