American Express Membership Rewards - Please explain how the Amex price match policy works
Hey Folks...
I was wondering how does the Amex Price Match Policy work?
IE....If I buy a WIDGET for $100.....10 days later I see the same WIDGET for sale some where else for $80?
I would also like to know does it matter if the original seller of WIDGET for $100 redunds any sort of difference?
Does Amex really pay the difference?
What sort of proof is required to obtain the difference?
Not sure if card type matters, but I have a DL Amex Plat.
Thanks for all your help.

I used the best buy value guarantee quite a bit in years past ( a few times a year) when you were allowed to match web site prices. Now they want printed advertisements (newspaper, magazines, etc.) which makes it harder. I haven't put in a claim since. But if you are good at watching for magazine ads you may do well. They do not take back-end rebates in to account for matching, but they will take out any discount coupon that you applied up front.

Here is all the detail you get on the Amex's website:
Best Value Guarantee
Getting the lowest price is easy. If you see an identical covered item advertised in print at a lower price than you paid, within 60 days of the purchase date, we will reimburse you for the difference, up to $250 per item excluding taxes, shipping and handling, and up to $1,000 annually per Card Account. For more details, or to file a claim, call 1-800-557-8317. Purchases made as of May 1, 2003 will no longer honor lower price comparisons found on the Internet. We will gladly honor your request for a refund on a savings of $10 or more. Coverage is subject to additional terms, conditions, and exclusions
Thanks for all the help folks

I've done a few PriceMatches with my DL Amex card and they always ask if the original seller has a price match policy. I've given them all the answers: 'yes' (when it was Staples), 'no' (random place on the web), and 'I'm not sure' (when I didn't know). They've never refused my claim or made me go back to Staples when I said they had a pricematch policy in place too.
One plus I recently noticed is that Amex no longer cuts you a check for the difference, they simply credit your account. I suppose earn less miles but it also saves you a trip to the bank.
