So, after a lot of thinking and reading, I finally bought this PDA. Its the one that best fitted my needs, which are to have the basic PDA functions without all the absolute latest in communications tech. and features.

I love the design and screen.... however, Im having a few issues and wonder if other users of the same PDA have some tips to share. Thanks in advance to all for your help on this.

1) Power button. Mine seems to be extra hard. I cant seem to get it to function (ie. turn the PDA on/off unless I really press hard on it).
2) Customization. I cant seem to find all the cities (and their timezones) as options on the PDA. Is there a way to custom insert a city, or perhaps download a patch to ammend this? The list for South American cities is very small, I cant get the machine to accept EZE as a city.

Thats all for now... Im sure there will be tons of other questions as I start to use all the features...

Thanks again.

I have the Tungsten T (two models older) and mine seems ok. A friend of mine also bought the T and has had some issues with his power button. You might want to consider asking for an exchange.

2) Customization. I cant seem to find all the cities (and their timezones) as options on the PDA. Is there a way to custom insert a city, or perhaps download a patch to ammend this? The list for South American cities is very small, I cant get the machine to accept EZE as a city.

Again, speaking from experience with the T (so I hope it's the same on yours)... if you go to Preferences / Date & Time, then click on the Location drop down list, there's an option for Edit List...

Go into that, then click Add. There's no EZE, but you can pick any city on this list in fact because you can edit the entry afterwards. I clicked Add, then chose Santiago, Chile, as it's kind of close by. Then it takes you to the next screen where you can customise it to your liking. Just change Name to EZE and Time Zone to whatever you use. (I see that Argentina is not on the list!) I hope that helps a bit.

One other tip, I definitely recommend getting one of those adhesive plastic screen protectors (http://www.palmone.com/us/products/accessories/styli/P10949U.html). It will protect the screen from scratching which will happen with stylus use. If the screen protector gets all scratched up, you just peel it off and put on a new one.

Also, Im surfing around the Palm support website, and see that there are a number of software updates available. However, I cant seem to find an automatic function that will confirm whether I need any software updates or now.

The Palm Desktop software that the installation CD had on it has version 4.1.2 - which seems to be updated since the website says something about a 4.1 version update.

Can someone confirm this please?

Thanks.

FewMiles-- thanks for the tips, it worked out fine as you explained... ^ I now have EZE on the list, and it automatically updated my World Clock options also. Thanks for reminding me about the screen protectors, I had missed that one.

Now, lets see if this IT idiot can get the Bluetooth to function properly, I dont want to use that stupid USB cradle for anything more than desktop charging... :p

OK, so the HotSynch was indeed successfull... :D

But, the question remains... did I do this with BlueTooth? I just placed my T3 next to my T30 (IBM Thinkpad) and Windows XP picked up its presence... the icon on the taskbar showed an active IR connection... so then, was I using the laptops onboard infra-red port or was it bluetooth...?

IT experts... laugh your hearts out but, please.... help out the bozo... :D

PS: for the record, I never could get my laptop to do a Bluetooth synch with my Sony Ericsson mobile phone, so I dont know if the crap even works... :o

Grrrrrrrrrrr..... so, the HotSynch works but now I cant get it to synchronize the data with Outlook...

I know I have to use a conduit, but it appears that the software already has it, but I cant find it... what am I doing wrong?

Hey Amigos,

You should have gotten your Tungsten T3 for free, like me. Go to
http://www.ameritrade.com/lasthour and open an account with them. Since I already had one, I opened it in my wife's name.

The PDA showed up about 2 weeks later via UPS. You must use that URL to get in on the offer.

Anyone who uses it, just shoot me a note - I'd be glad if you used my referral code in the Palm Pays program when you register your PDA.

Gaucho,

I have a T30 also. The T30, as far as I know, does not have built-in Bluetooth. You need to buy a USB Bluetooth adapter. I recommend the Linksys USBBT100. Amazon has it - http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B0000DZET4/pakoracom for $44.99. This is a Class 1 Bluetooth adapter, meaning it has the longest range. You might find cheaper ones from D-Link, etc, but those are shorter range adapters.

Thus, the T30 sync happened with Infrared. If you cover the top edge of your Tungsten, the sync will fail, since you will be covering the Infrared lens.

Hope this helps

When you do your first HotSync, the desktop app should ask you if you want to use the Palm Desktop or MS Outlook to manage your Calendar and Contacts. Were you prompted?

You might want to get the newest Conduits from Palm for use with Outlook here: http://www.palmone.com/us/support/tungstent3/

Scroll all the way down and you will find this:
http://www.palmone.com/us/support/downloads/outlookupdate2k3.html
Outlook Conduits for Palm Update v1.01
Fixes issues with the current Outlook synchronization conduits and adds support for synchronizing with Microsoft® Outlook 2003.

You should also download some of the other updates while you are at it, like the HotSync update and the Tungsten T3 update.

Feel free to send me an email if you'd like to chat more over the phone.

Best regards.

yes chichow you just let the money in there for 6 months. Even if you dont interest the free T3 is worth the deal. let me know if you want more details at mnsweeps@yahoo.com as discussing the ameritrade deal would be hijacking the thread ;)

No, hijack away. Tell me more about this deal. What are the fees associated with this account? $10k is nothing... I just don't want to have to pay more fees than the T3 will cost...

The deal works this way:

New customers to Ameritrade open an account with a minimum of $10k in funding and you get a free Tungsten T3 and 25 commission-free trades. The free trades are good for 30 days only.

Now, you can invest this money however you like. So you can leave it as cash in their money market account. Otherwise, if you trade stocks and/or options, you can use the account for this. Just keep the account open for 6 months. The bonus is based on initial funding, not how much it is worth due to market fluctuations.

The account cannot be an IRA. It must be an individual or joint brokerage account. More terms can be found at http://www.ameritrade.com/lasthour

But, you get a free Tungsten T3, which is retailing for $400, so that's a nice ROI right there, even if you decide to go sell it on eBay :D

If you decide to go for this deal and found out about it because of my previous posting, I would appreciate your referral when you register the product. Just send me a PM and I will give you my details.

Best regards.

Only if you refer me for yours :p

For those of you looking for some accessories to add on, the Palm One store's prices suck. Instead, check Nextag and Pricegrabber. One of the good deals I found was the laptop hotsync cable / auto charger from Amazon for around $14:

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B000083EB2/pakoracom

Palm has it for the MSRP of $24.95. Just buy some $10 book for free shipping and you're set! :D

Also, if you need memory, check out the 1GB SD expansion card for $269 at eCost. You can use this card to store MP3, digital photos, etc:
http://www.ecost.com/ecost/shop/detail.asp?dpno=401035

Of course 1GB is pretty big, so check the smaller size cards also. But in general, that Palm store is the worst for prices.

Juan-- many thanks for the additional information, much appreciated. I could have sworn my T30 has Bluetooth, I have one of the last models of the T30, it was a full specs build, I dont have the exact model with me. Can someone re-confirm if T30's were shipped from the factory with or without BlueTooth? Thanks.

And yes, Im now using IR for HotSynch and it works quite smoothly. I need to fine tune the conduit though.

Amigo,

You are right about the BlueTooth. My T30 doesn't have it, but it seems to be listed on Google as having existed. Assuming you have it, there should be some sort of a BlueTooth application on your laptop. You need to turn on the BlueTooth transceiver, if it is not already on. My BlueTooth menus are in the "My Network" menus of Windows.

IBM has released newer BlueTooth packages for the T30:
http://www-306.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=MIGR-42358

Specifically, the BlueTooth software can be found at:
http://www-306.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=MIGR-39556
(dated Feb 04 2004)

and a Firmware update:
http://www-306.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=MIGR-44264
(dated Sep 05 2002)

you might need to install both.

Then make sure Bluetooth is active on your Tungsten T3.

You should then be able to pair the devices using some sort of a "Pair" or "Discover" function available.
