A display parts shortage could slow production of PalmOne's new Treo 600 smart phone, threatening to hurt sales momentum for the popular device and put the brakes on the company's latest rebound.

A shortage of a crap display? wow... :D

This isn't the first time Palm has had parts shortages, and the time to market for the Treo has been absolutely terrible, even now it's not a mainstream device. Devices like this should be available everywhere for them to be a success, instead it took them almost a year to get a GSM version out there in very limited amounts to just one operator. IMHO marketing the Treo was part success based on the reviews the product got, and part disaster based on it's price and terrible availability.

I think this is true of any smart phone. I waited for 2 frickin' years for the Kyocera 7135 before I decided to get the Treo. Why manufacturers can't get smart phones out the door in reasonable quanity and time is preplexing, especially considering that there is a pent up demand for these things.

I find this analysis funny:

The precariousness of device sales was underscored this week, when cell phone handset market share leader Nokia cited its inability to keep up with phone trends, especially in the midrange, as one of the reasons it missed first-quarter sales forecasts.

Nokia should fire all its developers. It can't keep with phone trends??? Bullsh*t. Nokia stood still with its outdated 52**, 62**, 88** phones for eons, while many other manufacturers flew by Nokia with new and better phones. The lack of execution is squarely due to Nokia's idiocy and design studios. I still have yet to find a SINGLE Nokia phone that is appealing in comparison to the other phones out there. This is really sad, considering I was a Nokia diehard 3-5 years ago.

*LOL* I was going to say there's probably a shortage due to no one making a display THAT bad anymore!!!! LOVE the phone but the display sucks.

I'm glad I got mine last November.

btw, why is it not a "mainstream device". CompUSA has been advertising them for $299 for the last several weeks

A year for GSM? The first release was Oramge - GSM. Iirc, the first US release was Sprint and was in October. Cingular's GSM press release was Nov. 13

One operator? Cingular, AT&T, TMobile, in addition to Sprint and soon Verizon. I'm not a phone geek, but are there many phones that are carried by every single provider?

Disaster based on price? Phone, full Palm OS5 PDA, camera, SDIO storage, very functional web browser (vs. the Blackberry hack job), 60-70kbps modem, email client, IM client, SMS, etc., for $299/$399, depending on which discount you took. I think it's quite a deal.
