US Airways Dividend Miles (Pre-FlightFund Merger) - Honeymoon on * Alliance

I have been waiting.... and waiting...... to book my honeymoon using US miles for FC on Lufthansa to South Africa for October. I am very nervous that by the time US joins * alliance, availability will be terrible. Can anyone comment on the likelihood of me being able to book?

My hunch is you will have trouble finding availability. I would call LH today and simply ask them if any award seats are available whatsoever. Granted, US will have a smaller inventory from which to choose (I think). But, if seats aren't available for LH members, then they certainly won't be available for Star alliance members.

I tried to call LH to ask about availability once US joins but they said their systems don't allow them to check. The agent can only look in the reward system if the miles are in your account--supposedly the two systems are separate. First, they type in your number. Then, through that system, they access reward availability for anything within 10,000 miles of what you have now. Since I have 0 miles, I can't get them to look at anything.

Best bet is to find someone on the LH forum with a mileage balance to look up availability for you. That still won't help you book anything though...

If US should fail to continue as a going concern, you might have a problem getting LH to honour your booking.

I'm not implying that US won't be around in October (I personally think they will). I would not, however, bet my honeymoon on it (if I had a honeymoon in October, which I don't :cool: ).

I am curious about how popular the South Africa flights are as well. Just like we all know it is impossible to get the Rome tickets on US, it would be useful to know how hard this is to get on LH.............

Rome's not that hard on US< although I did book it six months ago. I am taking the family to Rome in Envoy mid-May. Used DMUTA3 to upgrade my son, used miles to uprade wife and daughter. All of us in Row 1. :)

I was able to book coach on Lufthansa through Frankfurt into CPT and out of JNB. I would like to book business/first although business is completely unavailable and first is only available on the legs from JFK to Frankfurt and Frankfurt to JFK. Would you suggest I redeposit and take the partial first class while I can get it or just hold out and hope more seats will open for Germany/South Africa? Additionally any ideas for using US miles to work Mauritius into my itinerary, currently planning on buying roundtrips from JNB to MRU?
