Following up on a post in the Starwood forum, where I heaped praise on the new Sheraton there, I should take a minute to gush about the new-ish restaurant in Leawood called 40 Sardines.

Visit www.40sardines.com (http://www.40sardines.com) to get an idea of the menu here -- it's almost too hard for me to describe. My wife and I had a great meal of drinks, several appetizers and one entree that were most enjoyable. There is a nice bar area where you can dine at the bar or at several small tables. It was more comfortable for us than sitting in the main dining area.

The chefs at 40 Sardines come from the much-praised American Restaurant in K.C. Husband and wife combo Debbie and Michael Gold are James Beard award-winning chefs over the past several years.

This is definitely one of the best meals I have had in the past year or so. I couldn't recommend the place more highly for the level of cooking and friendly, professional service. This place has an optional 5 or 6-course tasting menu, where the chef will basically cook whatever he wants for you with the day's best meats, fish/shellfish and produce. There's also a great concept on the wine list -- 20 wines at $20, and the selection was very cool and offbeat to boot.

Another observation: You could be very happy here with a few glasses of wine or beer and a small plate or two of excellent appetizers (read: upscale bar food) from a separate bar menu.

FWIW, this is haute cuisine for relaxed, Midwest attitudes: Spinach salads with chunks of sauteed bacon and carmelized shallots, a fois gras skewer, chilled shrimp with fresh tomatoes and cilantro and a nice looking plate of braised short ribs with some sort of sauce reduction underneath. I really enjoyed a lamb rack with a very exotic (IMO) guava glaze; the lamb also came with fried plaintains and another root vegetable, whose name escapes me.

I couldn't say enough good things about this place. The only problem we had was enjoying too much food and not saving enough room for some GREAT looking deserts.

If you're in K.C. for business or pleasure or even just passing through the area, make a note to go here.
