I spend a lot of time in San Francisco but live in Sydney and eat out in both places quite a lot.....

Food in Sydney I find is generally superior to that in SF. Thoughts? Suggestions?

My wife and I have found food shopping in Norton St Leichardt is fantastic in both value and quality for most things when cooking at home....

Any other thoughts on ingredients?

Regards

Chris

Better late then never reply here !
I believe both cities have great dining
The trick in every city is finding ones personal taste.
San Francisco like Sydney has some amazing dining establishments.
In the end it all comes down to ones budget and finding the most consistent and high quality execution.
Nobody likes to waste money at any price on factory assembly line food with no skill or attention to product.
In either cities there are the best bangs for the buck places and the ones you have to cough up a lot to eat well in.
All make the dining landscape a lot of fun

Let me know some of your likes
Perhaps We can share some suggestions so the next time we are in each others neck of the world we can sample some of the real true finer joys of traveling
Cheers happy travels and dining

I find one of the better venues for food and view is the lovely Park hyatt.
They have a great 3 course with a glass of wine for lunch at $A59.
I also used to love the ANA japanese restaurant.
Also the Millenium Hotel Japanese.

Food in Sydney kills most other cities, and certainly those across the United States, including San Francisco. The issue revolves around the American concept of one flavour good, fifteen better. Consequently, rather too many flavours are loaded onto one plate for the good of the dish. Sydney has evolved a cleaner fresher style with more distinct, sharper tasting food. The middle range eating spot in Sydney produces world beating food for the price which is hard to say about US city restaraunts anywhere despite their other virtus. American cheap food value is the best in the world, for example, the amount of food against the price is unbeatable but Australia quality and price, particularly middle range is streets ahead. And the influx of Australian chefs into London over the last few years has now in turn begun to lift English food as well.

I enjoyed a fine meal at Bather's Pavilion in Sydney a couple of years ago and enjoyed my pre- and post-dinner walks along the water. Is Bather's still open?

I live in the SF Bay Area and have several favorites. Sydney, currently has notched up the dining establishments and is my favorite dining city.
My favorite place for a fantastic meal and great view on the Bay is The Boathouse on Blackwattle Bay, in Glebe. The boathouse is a rowing club associated with the University, I believe, and the view from there is of Sydney Skyline, "Madonna's Bra" Bridge & Darling Harbour.
