How long should it take to connect intl-intl in BKK? (two separate tickets). We arrive at 14:00 and fly out at 15:30; since they are separate tickets I assume we have to collect baggage then go through checkin and security. Or would it be better/safer to get the two PNRs combined somehow so we only are in transit?

Well, get the 1st airline to check your bags through if you can help it. They should be able to. Otherwise, the transit could be costly in time and money:
1) depending on the airline, it can be a long walk from where the plane docks to where you go through immigration, baggage claim and customs (can be quite a wait for immigration). I'd budget a minimum of 5 minutes and as long as 20 for this.
2) You have to take your checked bags through x-ray before you can check-in. Before you get there, there may be a long walk if the connecting flight uses the other terminal. I'd budget 2 to 7 minutes.
3) you have to pay a THB 500 departure tax (they only accept payment in THB so that may mean having to go to a money changer).
Budget 30 seconds to 5 minutes.
4) you have to go through passport controls (the officials are slow) and lines can be lenghty. Budget 1 to 10 minutes.
5) have to go through primary security screening. Budget 1 minute.
6) have to get to the gate (again, can be a long walk). I've been on BA flights that check in at south end of the south (2) terminal and board at the very north end of the north (1) terminal. 3-10 minutes.
7) have to get through gate security (about 1-5 minutes).
If you can get your bags checked through, you have to go to the transfer desk to get BPs for the connecting flight. Not sure how long this process takes and then get to your gate (it can be a very long walk depending on which terminals your flights depart from and arrive at).

Thanks for the info! The flights are both in Terminal 2. We're arriving on Bangkok Airways from Phnom Penh connecting with Finnair to HKG.
