Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger is pushing Richard Branson, the maverick founder of Virgin Atlantic Airways, to base the company's new domestic carrier near San Francisco International Airport and provide a centerpiece for the governor's promise to make California business-friendly.

A team of seven senior executives from fledgling carrier Virgin USA flew into San Francisco International Airport on Monday, where they were met by, among others, two women in red Victorian ball gowns and a couple of skateboarders, also clad in red.

Cheerleaders, divas, drag queens, skateboarders and politicos spent the past two days trying to entice fledgling airline Virgin USA to put its headquarters in the Bay Area.

"Quality facilities, cost of living for our employees, operating expenses and quality of life are all important,'' Farrow said.

If you're factoring in the cost of housing versus the other sites being considered, that might weigh heavily against SFO. Add in the weather delays that ran Southwest out of there, and they have two strikes against them from the start. They're going to have to offer one powerful package to get a new carrier in there (though I know they offer "reduced" landing fees to carriers offering new routes from SFO).
