California - How close are UA and AA gates?

I've only flown UA out of SFO. I have a friend leaving on AA about the same time as I'm on UA. How far apart are the gates? Assume you'd have to exit the secure area to get to the other location? Also, is there a restaurant or coffee shop that would be convenient, perhaps outside of security?

They share the same general terminal, but have separate security. They are fairly close. The Crab Pot is probably the best bet, just outside of security over at UA. Its only a few mins walk to the AA security lines.

Actually the Crab Pot is inside security. The closest eateries outside security for both UA and AA would be by the AA security entrance at Pier E. There is a sit-down restaurant and a walk up fast food place. The restaurant is over to the left of the AA security area over by the UA employee security entrance. The fast food place is to the right of the AA security area.

Thanks SFOJFK and Eastbay1K. The ability to get helpful answers to really specific questions on FT is always impressive.

It was outside of security for so many years I never even really noticed that it is now behind it after they reconfigured the terminal.

Not as convenient, but definitely better for food, is the international food court in the international terminal. Follow the bridge to the terminal and it's immediately to your left as soon as you enter the terminal itself. About 6 minute's walk from UA regular security, 8 from AA's.

Also, if you're using on-airport parking, the parking at the international terminal is "only" $20/day vs. $40/day for domestic parking. Park in the "G" structure (again, see map).
