The Grant Park Music Festival, presented by the Chicago Park District and the Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs, celebrates its 69th annual season in 2003, its last before moving to the Millennium Park Music Pavilion in 2004.

Principal Conductor Carlos Kalmar, Principal Guest Conductor James Paul, and Chorus Director Christopher Bell return to lead the Grant Park Orchestra and Chorus in a season that celebrates the strengths of the Festival; its world-class orchestra, chorus and conductors, and an outstanding roster of local and international guest artists.
The 2003 season will be highlighted by performances of The ****ation of Faust, "The Music of Irving Berlin and Jerome Kern" and appearances by Kevin Cole, Mariachi Cobre and Former Music Director Hugh Wolff.
The free concert series begins on Wednesday, June 11, and runs most Wednesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays until August 16. Concerts begin at 6:30pm on Wednesdays, as part of the "Rush Hour" series, and at 7:30pm on Fridays and Saturdays. Most performances are held at the Petrillo Music Shell, located at the corner of Jackson Boulevard and Columbus Drive.

The 2003 season is set to begin with a "Rush Hour" series concert on Wednesday, June 11, as audience and critical darling Valentina Lisitsa returns for a performance of Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 2. The 2003 season is the Ukrainian-born Lisitsa's sixth consecutive summer performing at the Grant Park Music Festival. Opening weekend continues with performances of selections of Bernstein's West Side Story on Friday, June 13, and Saturday, June 14.

The Wednesday night "Rush Hour" series, which drew average crowds of more than 6,500 concertgoers in 2002, returns in 2003. Featuring classical and pops favorites, these concerts begin at 6:30pm and run for an hour and a half without intermission. Other programs include The Romantic Tchaikovsky on June 18, pianist Kevin Cole in The American Radio Hour on July 16, From the Italian Baroque on July 23, "The Music of Irving Berlin and Jerome Kern" on July 30, the Lyric Opera Center for American Artists on August 6, and Mariachi Cobre on August 13. The Wednesday night "Rush Hour" series is sponsored by Bank One.

Favorite Festival traditions returning in the 69th season include the Independence Eve, July 3, and Venetian Night, August 2, concerts. This year, Chorus Director Christopher Bell leads the Grant Park Orchestra and the United States Air Force Singing Sergeants in a rousing tribute to America's Independence. The Venetian Night concert on Saturday, August 2, will also be conducted by Bell, and features a "Member All Request Program" to be announced in June. The city's annual Venetian Night boat parade and fireworks show follow the concert.

Founded by the Chicago Park District in 1935 and co-presented by the Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs since 2001, the Grant Park Music Festival is the nation's only free, municipally-funded, outdoor classical music series. The Festival runs for ten consecutive weeks from June 11-August 16 at the Petrillo Music Shell, located at the corner of Jackson Boulevard and Columbus Drive. In 2004 the Grant Park Music Festival will move to the state-of-the-art music pavilion designed by internationally-renowned architect Frank Gehry.

All Grant Park Music Festival performances are free to the public. Open lawn and pavilion seats are available on a first-come, first-served basis. One-night passes for access to the reserved seating area are available for $10. Season memberships, which include reserved seating for all concerts as well as invitations to special events, are also available. Convenient parking is located at three nearby garages: the Grant Park East Monroe Garage, the Grant Park North Garage, and the Millennium Park Garage.

The mission of the Grant Park Music Festival is to offer a top-notch symphony experience free of charge to all of Chicago's diverse population. While most concerts are held in the Petrillo Bandshell along Chicago's lakefront, the Grant Park Orchestra and Chorus regularly perform outreach concerts in neighborhoods throughout the city. The Festival runs for 10 weeks every summer and concert attendance averages more than 5,000 people.
