I think it correctly reflects a trend for SOME travelers. Folks that travel once a year to their annual convention are still going to go the old route,but more experienced travelers are looking at convention rates as no big bargains. One problem though,is many times the availabilty (at prime convention locations) is very low for deeply discounted web-rates.

You're probably right, Jabez, that there will always be a large group of travelers who take the standard convention deal. However, even if a modest percentage of folks skip the convention rate and find a discount, they can have a nasty impact on the hotel.

For example, if 20% of the convention goers find a 30% discount, that's 6% of the revenue from the convention down the drain. That's 6% coming right out of the profits (ouch!).
