Any idea which comes out cheaper ?

LAX-London-LAX early September
Virgin website $635
local discounter $600
Hotwire $500-$525

any idea what might work with Priceline ?

If you're getting $500 on HotWire, your strategy should be to bid less on priceline -- if Priceline accepts less, you've won. If priceline doesn't accept less, you still have the $500 option on HotWire (since you've got an hour to buy).

you could also try studentuniverse.com if you are a professor or univ student (of any age) or ebookers.com
I have had good luck with both.

also,

I bought a ticket dtw-sao last winter on hotwire for $345 incl taxes. Not bad considering it turned out to be on UA 777 ord-gru. Contrary to UAL/HOTWIRE policy I was able to change the return date for no fee directly with UAL at GRU. They also gave me MP miles (which were recently revoked by revenue control). %&/!@

Only rarely does Hotwire beat Priceline.
