Online Travel Booking and Bidding Agencies - AVIS penalty charges for Priceline booking change

A head's up for those who are considering using Priceline for a car rental. I got a good rate last weekend on a mid-size at Fort Lauderdale on Avis using Priceline. However, due to a last minute glitch in my travel plans, I had to return the car to Miami airport instead of Fort Lauderdale. Now for "normal" car rentals, MIA and FLL are considered interchageable, with no drop off fees or charges if you rent from one and choose to return to the other location. However, Avis charged me $140 *per day* for returning to Miami instead of FLL. I can understand and accept if they charge me the differential between their regular rate and the Priceline rate or something like that, but a fee of $140 per day for this smacks of extortion.

I am trying to take this up with AVIS Customer Service, but I get a message on the phone saying they are too busy, to call later. I also sent an email this morning to AVIS customer support, but have not heard anything yet.

So -- everybody -- please learn from my sad story and avoid making the same mistake I did!

If you change anything other then your pick up time (I believe you have a 24 hour window there) with a Priceline rental, expect to be charged a zillion dollars. Change the drop off time, change the location, you go from some very nice fee to buying the car. It's part of the deal with them, they don't know you didn't rent the car planning to bring it back to another airport the whole time.

$140 per day! I understand a penalty, but that's crazy. It seems that this is more Avis' attitude than Pricelines "fault".It,however, stenghthens my personal decision to not use Priceline for rentals.
