I just bought my first Canadian hotel on priceline, and was pleasantly surprised to see that they didn't charge me any of the nasty sales taxes, under the theory that as an American I am exempt from them.

That's generally true, but the Canadians keep making it increasingly difficult to get the hotel tax back for foreigners (as they should -- everyone else tries to ADD extra taxes for tourists!). I think this is an excellent additional reason to use priceline north of the border, as the savings (and hassle avoidance) are even greater. Too bad their "network" doesn't seem well developed outside of the handful of large Canadian cities.

Are you sure you weren't charged the taxes? My experience is they give you the party line that you stated, but then hide the taxes in the priceline total anyway.

Well, on a $30 room, I was only charged $1.95 in taxes. It seems like Quebec taxes are at least 15% these days (where my hotel is), so I think they took something off.

Maybe, but the taxes at Priceline are based on what PL paid for the room, not what you had bid. Any chance that PL may have only paid $13 for the room?
